BMO commits $5 million to advance surgical innovation and precision cancer care at UHN's Toronto Western Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre français. Mar 30, 2026, 06:30 ET TORONTO, March 30, 2026 /CNW/ - University Health Network (UHN) is pleased to announce a $5-million philanthropic gift from BMO to support the construction of a new Surgical Tower at UHN's Toronto Western Hospital and the expansion of PMATCH, an AI-powered precision oncology initiative at UHN's Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. "We're proud to support UHN as they lead the way in transforming life-changing care for patients with cancer," said Darryl White, CEO of BMO Financial Group and Campaign Cabinet Co-Chair of the UHN Surgical Tower Campaign. "This investment puts the patient first by fostering a culture of technology innovation, collaboration and empowerment, which are key contributors to the high-quality health care that strengthens our communities." BMO's gift will play a critical role in advancing cancer treatment at both Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and UHN's new Surgical Tower at Toronto Western Hospital, a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to meet the growing and increasingly complex surgical needs of patients across Ontario and beyond. Purpose-built to drive innovation, the Tower will significantly expand surgical capacity, modernize operating rooms and provide an elevated care journey for patients and their loved ones. BMO's gift will also support PMATCH, a world-first, AI-powered initiative that uses artificial intelligence to better connect cancer patients with the most suitable clinical trials - first at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and ultimately expanding to other participating Canadian hospitals. Using individual clinical and genomic profiles, PMATCH will improve patient screening through automation, streamline trial enrollment and support more efficient and equitable cancer research and care. "This generous gift from BMO reflects the power of philanthropy to drive both innovation and collaboration across our healthcare system," said Dr. Kevin Smith, President & CEO of University Health Network. "Support for the new Surgical Tower will help UHN meet the growing demand for complex surgical care, while this shared investment alongside The Princess Margaret to advance PMATCH will improve how patients are connected to clinical trials and accelerating discovery for patients across Canada." Together, these investments reflect a shared commitment to advancing patient-centred care through both state-of-the-art infrastructure and targeted innovation. By supporting the Surgical Tower and PMATCH, BMO's gift will help expand access to care, accelerate discovery and strengthen Canada's health care system for patients today and in the future. Nancy Marco Buckman: A pioneer, mentor, and leader in electrophysiology retires.

Nancy Marco Buckman: A pioneer, mentor, and leader in electrophysiology retires. March 24, 2026 Nancy Marco Buckman is calling it quits after serving as a nurse clinician and nurse practitioner at UHN for over 43 years. (Photo: UHN) After 43 years of dedicated service at UHN, Nancy Marco Buckman is signing off. Throughout her nursing career at UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Nancy co-built and shaped the Electrophysiology (EP) program by establishing triage standards and mentoring generations of clinicians. Her contributions have left a lasting impact on cardiac care and will continue to long after her departure. Nancy began her professional journey in Florida in 1980. Following her relocation to Canada, she joined UHN's Toronto General Hospital in 1983. At Toronto General, Nancy worked in the Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Intensive Care Unit before transitioning in 1996 to the cardiology unit, where she served as a care leader and quickly became recognized for her exceptional clinical judgment, leadership and unwavering commitment to patient care. In 1998, Nancy joined the Electrophysiology team as a nurse clinician, and, in 2009, she advanced into the role of nurse practitioner. As a nurse clinician, Nancy played a foundational role in establishing the EP triage program. Her depth of experience, clinical insight, and thoughtful approach to systems-based care made her a critical and indispensable member of the EP team. The standards she set continue to guide triage processes and nursing practice within the program. As a nurse practitioner, colleagues say Nancy's professionalism, dedication, and compassion profoundly shaped both patient care and team culture. She was involved in all aspects of the department, and her sustained commitment and exceptional service have been instrumental to the success and evolution of the EP program. Over the years, Nancy has mentored and trained numerous nurse practitioners and has helped shape the inpatient training experience of countless electrophysiology trainees. Her influence is evident not only in the care delivered today, but in the clinical judgment, professionalism and values of those she has trained. Nancy's meticulous attention to patient care, combined with her ability to balance detail-oriented decision making with a clear understanding of the broader clinical picture, has been invaluable. Her career at UHN is one to be proud of - one that has positively influenced patients, learners and colleagues across generations. It represents a truly remarkable legacy. In retirement, Nancy looks forward to spending time with her family, particularly her three sons and five grandchildren, who are her greatest joy and always bring a smile to her face. She also plans to enjoy well-deserved rest and relaxation, time with friends and travel. Colleagues from the EP team, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and UHN extend their warmest wishes for a fulfilling and joyful retirement. Nancy will be deeply missed. Search Its News

TORONTO GENERAL SECOND BEST HOSPITAL IN WORLD: NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE ANNUAL RANKING

Toronto General second best hospital in world: Newsweek magazine annual ranking. Feb 26, 2026 By Jane Brown Toronto General Hospital has been named the second best hospital in the world in an annual ranking by Newsweek magazine. The University Health Network hospital has moved up a spot since last year, placing just behind Rochester, Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic. Newsweek, in partnership with Statista, ranked 250 hospitals by surveying medical experts, compiling patient experience data and quality metrics for more than 2500 hospitals across 32 countries. Ohio's Cleveland Clinic, which held second place for the past seven years, has been bumped down to third. UHN President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Smith says moving up in the rankings as a universally accessible institution is a reason to celebrate, and in part credits a recent push to poach Canadian talent from institutions abroad. Toronto General Hospital is known for cardiac care, organ transplants and complex patient needs. On air now. Artist: bruce springsteen. Title: born to run.
