Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience in a patient accounts-related area are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of insurance verification, precertification, patient accounts, credit statements, payment plans, deposits, sponsorship programs, hospital financial policies, credit policies, and hospital charges is required.
  • Ability to accurately and timely document insurance benefit information in the hospital computer system is required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform patient account management functions for individuals receiving services.
  • Complete insurance verification, obtain precertification, complete credit statements, establish payment plans, request deposits, and initiate referrals to sponsorship programs.
  • Coordinate account management through discharge and forward accounts to the patient accounting office.
  • Contact third-party payors to verify patient insurance benefits, document the information in the hospital computer system, monitor benefits throughout inpatient stays, and obtain required signatures.
  • Inform patients of hospital financial policies, establish payment plans according to those policies, and assist patients in identifying resources to meet their hospital obligations.
  • Obtain precertification approvals for elective and other inpatient stays and refer cases to physicians and Utilization Review for follow-up on needed medical information.
  • Interview responsible parties to determine credit status, verify collected information, and maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Initiate sponsorship-program applications, including completing forms and scheduling appointments, based on credit statements and account-history evaluations.
  • Calculate patient deposit requirements, inform patients of deposits, request payments, and coordinate deposit collection with Admitting Officers and Cashiers.
  • Discuss pending admissions with physicians and their office staff to ensure proper information is received.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
