Requirements
  • A Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, data science, information technology, or a related field is required.
  • At least 4 years of experience designing and developing solutions for large-scale artificial intelligence and machine learning systems or building product solutions with artificial intelligence and machine learning features and capabilities is required.
  • Strong experience with industry use cases built on deep learning and machine learning, including unsupervised and supervised techniques, is required.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras, and PyTorch is required.
  • Experience with time-series analysis, anomaly detection, forecasting, predictive modeling, graph-based neural networks, Bayesian statistics, and text analytics is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assess institutional needs and implement artificial-intelligence-enabled services on high-performance AI computing platforms.
  • Work with scientists, business stakeholders, analysts, and information-systems professionals to design, develop, and implement AI solutions and services, including technology proofs of concept, pilots, and the adoption lifecycle.
  • Build new and innovative solutions leveraging data science and artificial-intelligence and machine-learning skills and technologies to solve non-trivial problems.
  • Develop AI demonstration use cases and workshop materials, and provide workshops and training classes.
  • Evaluate commercial and open-source approaches in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, and analytics to solve business problems.
  • Identify, develop, and implement standards and operating procedures for solutions and systems consistent with best practices.
  • Document current-state and future-state architecture roadmaps and reference architectures.
  • Provide clear written and spoken communications to customers, teams, and vendors.
  • Keep abreast of new and emerging technologies and assess their potential applicability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to meet department and institutional goals and objectives.
Desired Qualifications
  • A PhD in data science, computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience training, fine-tuning, or adapting large language models or multimodal foundation models, including parameter-efficient fine-tuning, Low-Rank Adaptation, instruction tuning, and preference optimization, and debugging catastrophic forgetting or training instability.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving distributed or multi-GPU training and inference issues, including NCCL communication hangs, CUDA out-of-memory errors, and load balancing across nodes, and scheduling AI workloads on high-performance computing systems such as Slurm to maximize GPU utilization.
  • Experience designing safety guardrails and sandboxing for agentic systems, including tool-access scoping, prompt-injection defense, secrets management, audit logging, and failure containment.
  • Experience optimizing inference cost, latency, and resource usage through KV-cache management, quantization, batching, speculative decoding, and high-throughput serving with vLLM, TensorRT-LLM, or Triton, and determining when a simpler deterministic pipeline is preferable to an agentic system.
  • Experience safeguarding data security and privacy for AI systems handling sensitive research data, including access controls and institutional data-use and security policies.
  • Experience building rigorous, reproducible benchmarking and evaluation frameworks that distinguish genuine model improvement from prompt overfitting, retrieval effects, or evaluator bias.
  • Experience building and scaling AI and machine-learning pipelines and workflows on high-performance computing or cloud environments.
  • Demonstrated ownership of systems beyond the prototype stage, including observability, versioning, rollback, cost control, and incident response.
  • Contributions to open-source AI and machine-learning infrastructure projects such as vLLM, PyTorch, Ray, or Hugging Face, or a public track record through GitHub, Hugging Face, or papers.
  • Familiarity with biomedical research, imaging, or regulated health data.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through setting standards, mentoring, and cross-team collaboration.

What believers are saying

  • ARPA-H awarded up to $28.5 million on July 6, 2026 for gene-editing trials.
  • St. Jude and ALSAC raised record gala proceeds in May 2026, signaling donor momentum.
  • The April 2026 IRS4 study used AI to identify new cancer targets across tumor types.

What critics are saying

  • James R. Downing exits in late 2026, forcing a leadership transition during expansion.
  • A July 2026 discrimination lawsuit and prior accommodation litigation expose recurring employment friction.
  • Donation dependence is existential; 87% of six-year funding still relies on public contributions.

What makes St. Jude Children's Research Hospital unique

  • ALSAC funds St. Jude, preserving free care, housing, food, and travel for families.
  • St. Jude shares discoveries openly, accelerating global pediatric oncology research beyond Memphis.
  • The FY22-27 plan commits $11.5 billion, including ARC II and major clinical expansion.
