Atlassian's Cannon-Brookes: AI agents need name tags and a human to blame for errors

Atlassian cofounder Mike Cannon-Brookes says people, not AI agents, must answer for the agents' mistakes. "That's Mike using ChatGPT. It's not ChatGPT doing it," he told Fortune. "The accountability is with the end user, ultimately." On October 6, Atlassian launched its "Agentic Multiplayer Protocol," a control plane that gives AI agents distinct profiles and owner attribution. An agent's edits should appear in a document's history just as a colleague's would. Cannon-Brookes said workplaces need permissions, security, and compliance controls that consumer AI agents lack. Otherwise, staff could leak privileged information. The Sydney-based company posted $1.8 billion in revenue for the quarter ended June 30, above analysts' average estimate of $1.7 billion, according to Reuters.

Atlassian launches AMP protocol for human-AI teamwork collaboration

Atlassian has launched AMP (Agentic Multiplayer Protocol) at its Team '26 Europe conference in Amsterdam. The protocol enables AI agents to collaborate with human teams in shared workspaces rather than isolated sessions. AMP allows agents to participate in work through @mentions in Confluence, Jira comment threads, and Loom video briefs. Each agent receives a distinct identity and appears in real-time presence bars alongside human teammates. The protocol is grounded in Atlassian's Teamwork Graph, which now connects over 250 billion objects and relationships. The company has shipped over 120 enterprise capabilities in the past year. People and agents now work together more than 10 million times monthly on Atlassian's platform. Atlassian MCP now has nearly 2 million monthly active users and handles over 15 million daily tool calls. Atlassian serves over 350,000 customers worldwide, including 85% of Fortune 500 companies.

Atlassian embeds AI engineers with clients to boost enterprise adoption by 50%

Atlassian has launched its Forward Deployed Engineering programme, embedding senior applied AI engineers directly with customers to build production-ready AI solutions. The 12-week engagements focus on deploying custom Rovo agents, automations, and workflow integrations across the Teamwork Graph. The programme addresses the gap between AI adoption and measurable returns. Whilst 85% of knowledge workers use AI, only 6% of executives can demonstrate clear organisation-wide ROI, according to Atlassian research. Engaged accounts show 50% higher AI adoption rates. Early customers include Expedia, which archived 600,000 Confluence pages and saved approximately 3,200 hours annually, and Reddit, which is streamlining enterprise operations using Atlassian's AI capabilities. The collaborative model pairs Atlassian engineers with customer teams, with improvements feeding back into the platform. Internal testing showed AI agents grounded in the Teamwork Graph produced 44% higher quality answers whilst using 48% fewer tokens.

Atlassian patches critical file access flaw in datacenter products

Atlassian has issued an urgent warning about a critical vulnerability affecting its datacenter products. The flaw, CVE-2026-21589, has a severity rating of 9.3 and allows unauthenticated attackers to access specific files within the web application root directory. The vulnerability impacts datacenter versions of Bitbucket, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Jira Software, Bamboo, Crowd, Crucible, and Fisheye. Atlassian warns that sensitive files may be exposed in some configurations. The company has released patches and urges users to upgrade immediately. Those unable to patch quickly should remove instances from the internet until they can apply the fix. Cloud-based Atlassian users are unaffected, as the company has already addressed the vulnerability in its software-as-a-service offering. Atlassian discontinued its datacenter products last year, encouraging users to migrate to its cloud platform.

Atlassian stock triples from 52-week low as AI fears prove overblown

Atlassian has surged more than 200% from its April low of $57, defying Wall Street's fears that artificial intelligence would devastate software companies. The collaboration software firm posted exceptional results, with fourth-quarter revenue jumping 28% year-over-year to $1.77 billion, beating analyst expectations of $1.66 billion. The company's AI platform, Rovo, embedded into flagship products Jira and Confluence, is driving growth. Annual recurring revenue from Rovo customers is growing at twice the pace of non-Rovo customers. Rovo-powered agents produce 44% more accurate answers whilst consuming 48% fewer tokens. Operating costs rose just 12% despite strong revenue growth, enabling Atlassian to swing to a $139.1 million profit from a year-earlier loss. Adjusted profit soared 83% to $473.1 million. Despite the rally, shares trade at a price-to-sales ratio of 7.1, below the three-year average of 9.8.
