About the job

Requirements
  • Several years of experience managing embedded, firmware, or hardware-adjacent engineering teams, including hiring, performance reviews, and difficult personnel conversations.
  • A solid engineering background in embedded systems, with experience shipping firmware or devices to production and the ability to hold technical discussions with senior engineers.
  • Comfort with the physical aspects of products, including electronics, electromagnetic compatibility, test laboratories, and manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated experience working with certification bodies, notified bodies, or regulated products, or the ability to take ownership of this work quickly.
  • Strong self-organization to reliably follow through on parallel workstreams involving people, releases, audits, vendors, and factories.
  • A track record of building self-managing teams by delegating, developing technical leads, and avoiding becoming a critical path.
  • Excellent communication skills in English for interacting with firmware engineers, executives, and external auditors.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and grow a team of 6–8 engineers across embedded software, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering through one-on-ones, performance reviews, compensation input, hiring, and structured performance management when needed.
  • Own delivery by planning quarterly goals and OKRs with leadership, translating requests from country organizations into scoped and estimated engineering work, and declining work with a rationale when needed.
  • Own the firmware release train across development, canary, and production for the charger fleet, and be accountable for fleet-impacting incidents alongside operations teams.
  • Drive certification and compliance as an ongoing workstream, including Eichrecht Modul B and Modul D, CE and EMC campaigns, VDE and TÜV interactions, DSO assessments, and upcoming regulations and technologies such as vehicle-to-grid and AFIR changes.
  • Manage key vendors and partners across the bill of materials, including the EVCC board supplier, meter vendors, payment terminal providers, the contract manufacturer, and upstream open-source partners.
  • Keep production shippable by managing end-of-line testing, bill-of-materials changes and cost analysis, supply-chain risk, and same-day escalation support when the factory line stops.
  • Build a resilient team structure by developing technical leads, keeping the manager off the critical path of individual-contributor work, and reducing dependence on individuals for certification and hardware knowledge.
Desired Qualifications
  • German language skills, as supplier, certification, and authority communications frequently take place in German.
  • Experience in EV charging or e-mobility, including OCPP, ISO 15118, Eichrecht, or smart charging.
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux (Yocto), EVerest, open-source contributions, Rust, or modern C++.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and owning production or end-of-line testing.
  • Experience managing multi-generation products, with legacy fleets and new platforms running in parallel.

About the company

Qwello runs a pan-European public EV charging network focused on urban areas in countries like Germany, the UK, France, and the Netherlands. Users locate, reserve, and pay for pay-per-use charging through a proprietary mobile app, with ad-hoc credit card payments supported at the charger where available. The system emphasizes AFIR-compliant hardware and payment flows, offering a subscription-free experience powered entirely by the app. The goal is to build a wide, reliable urban charging network across Europe that makes it easy for drivers to find, reserve, and pay for charging on demand, funded to accelerate expansion.
