Requirements
  • Completion of a formal two-year post-secondary or college diploma program in Social Service Work and/or Childcare.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain it.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification, or willingness to obtain it.
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention certification; training will be provided if necessary.
  • A current driver's licence and driving abstract.
  • ASIST certification.
  • Food Handling Certificate.
  • More than one year of prior related experience in a residential setting working with marginalized clientele.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Behaviour Based Model.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office, the internet, and keyboarding.
  • Ability to work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to recognize potential risks, conflicts, and issues proactively and respond with solutions and coaching.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Patience and ability to de-escalate situations.
  • Ability to coach and provide constructive feedback.
  • Ability to make decisions within an established framework and understand their impact on programming.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to understand resident behaviour and assess residents' needs and risks.
  • Ability to demonstrate understanding of and empathy toward cultural differences.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise residents in the facility and community in a lawful, safe, and expedient manner.
  • Monitor youth activities and remain available to provide personal, practical, and moral support.
  • Develop and maintain therapeutic relationships with youth to facilitate effective intervention.
  • Plan, implement, monitor, and participate in group activities, including life-skills training modules and social recreational programming.
  • Participate in sports and recreational activities, including swimming, basketball, soccer, hiking, cleaning, and crafts.
  • Use the environment in assessing, teaching, and supporting residents with problem-solving and conflict resolution.
  • Adopt an age-appropriate parental role in residents' daily living skills, routines, supportive care, and limit setting.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of case plans.
  • Report client progress, changes, and regression to the Caseworker.
  • Complete duties, reports, and logs according to the shift description.
  • Address interpersonal relationships within Gemma House therapeutically.
  • Refer clients to outside resources and counselling when needed, and encourage residents to develop family and community-based support networks with the Case Management Supervisor.
  • Follow the policies and procedures of Gemma House, The Salvation Army, and the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.
  • Assume delegated responsibility for the facility when assigned.
  • Maintain residents' safety and security through engagement, supervision, and monitoring.
  • Manage serious incidents and crises safely and therapeutically while communicating and enforcing facility rules.
  • Supervise medication delivery and ensure residents receive appropriate medical attention as required.
  • Maintain client care and perform facility duties such as housekeeping, preparing and serving meals, and cleaning vehicles.
  • Participate as an active member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Complete documentation concerning client safety, incident reports, fire safety, and other serious incidents.
  • Document daily events, progress toward goals, and significant occurrences.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding residents, their issues, and their concerns.
  • Participate in team meetings.
  • Present concerns, questions, and issues in prescribed forums.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member to provide a coordinated and consistent approach to residents.
  • Provide input into decisions regarding program admissions and discharges.
  • Participate as required in the organization's evaluation and goal-setting processes.
  • Travel with youth to scheduled and unscheduled appointments and programming activities.
  • Work rotational shifts and perform occasional unscheduled overtime as required.
