Requirements
  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Hold a current swim instructor certification from a recognized organization, such as Y-USA, or obtain it within 30 days of hire.
  • Hold current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, or obtain them within 30 days of hire.
  • Hold a current Administering Emergency Oxygen certification, or obtain it within 30 days of hire.
  • Demonstrate the ability to assist children and others in developing swimming skills.
  • Be able to lift equipment and a small to average-size child.
  • Be able to teach skills to others.
  • Pass a swim competency test.
  • Adhere to abuse prevention policies, maintain appropriate boundaries, complete required training, report suspicious or inappropriate behavior, and comply with mandated reporting requirements.
  • Pass a background check.
Responsibilities
  • Instruct swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines.
  • Assist with maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and in surrounding areas.
  • Develop positive relationships with participants and parents, encourage involvement, and identify potential volunteers.
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Follow YMCA policies, rules, regulations, procedures, and emergency and safety procedures.
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed and complete incident and accident reports when necessary.
  • Organize and put away class equipment and report damaged equipment.
  • Convey basic information about YMCA programs and schedules to members and refer members to other YMCA Total Health programs or staff as appropriate.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations, including differences in language, culture, race, physical ability, and sexual orientation.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
