Requirements
  • A Master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and at least 1 year of industry or research and development experience; or a Bachelor's degree in those fields and at least 2 years of such experience; equivalent experience is also accepted.
  • Verification of citizenship or other protected status is required to meet legal and export-control requirements, including U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, refugee, asylee, or other applicable protected status where required.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
  • Ability to work in an AI-first environment using modern artificial intelligence tools during hardware development.
  • Familiarity with designing and building artificial intelligence agents or copilots for experiment setup, log triage, measurement report generation, protocol templating, and knowledge retrieval.
Responsibilities
  • Design and implement register-transfer-level RTL for streaming, low-latency pipelines such as readout classifiers, syndrome aggregation, and quantum error-correction decoder kernels in Verilog or SystemVerilog, including resource, performance, power, and thermal trade-offs.
  • Design and implement high-speed interconnects between subsystems using AXI4, AXI-Stream, JESD204, Aurora, Ethernet/UDP, and PCIe, including SERDES configuration, link bring-up, and throughput and latency tuning.
  • Design robust clocking and clock-domain-crossing strategies using MMCM/PLL trees, jitter budgets, multi-domain timing closure, asynchronous FIFOs, and metastability analysis.
  • Co-design hardware, firmware, and software boundaries, including register maps, DMA, interrupt models, and driver interfaces, with control/readout software and instrument teams.
  • Develop simulations and constrained-random tests using SystemVerilog/UVM or equivalent, build on-board diagnostics with ILA/ChipScope, and perform laboratory bring-up with oscilloscopes, VNAs, logic analyzers, and RF instruments.
  • Own synthesis and implementation flows using Vivado/Vitis or Quartus/Prime, perform timing sign-off, and maintain reproducible scripted builds integrated with Git and Azure DevOps CI/CD.
  • Produce design documentation, interface specifications, and bring-up guides; participate in code and design reviews and post-silicon or post-fabrication retrospectives.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of production FPGA design experience in Verilog/SystemVerilog or VHDL, including synthesis, place-and-route, and static timing analysis on Xilinx/AMD or Intel platforms.
  • Experience delivering low-latency streaming datapaths such as digital signal processing, filtering, classification, or decoder pipelines with tight high-clock timing closure.
  • Hands-on experience with high-speed input/output protocols, including AXI4/AXI-Stream, JESD204, Aurora, and multi-gigabit SERDES, plus link bring-up, eye margins, and error-budget analysis.
  • Proficiency in clocking and clock-domain-crossing fundamentals and experience with multi-clock, multi-reset systems.
  • Verification experience with simulation, assertions, and testbenches; UVM experience is a plus, as is laboratory debugging with ILA/ChipScope, scopes, logic analyzers, and RF test equipment.
  • Familiarity with RFSoC architectures, data converters, JESD links, and/or heterogeneous co-processing with CPUs or GPUs.
  • Experience working across hardware/software boundaries, including DMA performance tuning, drivers, gRPC/REST control surfaces, telemetry, observability, and scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience accelerating decoders using graph, union-find, MWPM-style, or LDPC-class techniques, streaming inference/classification, or similar real-time algorithms.
  • Exposure to high-level synthesis using C/C++ kernels and mixed HLS/RTL systems, and to formal verification.
  • Background in signal processing, control, quantum control, or quantum readout concepts.
  • Experience with Windows, Linux, Visual Studio Code, Git/GitHub, Azure DevOps CI/CD, Tcl, Python, design documentation, code reviews, and comprehensive testing.

Microsoft gives US schools enforceable AI privacy controls over student data

Microsoft announced it will allow every US school district to set its own AI privacy and safety rules in their contracts. The move comes days after New York City imposed a one-year moratorium on AI in public schools. The "National AI Safety & Privacy Standard", announced by Microsoft Vice Chair Brad Smith alongside teachers' union leaders, becomes legally enforceable when written into district agreements. It prohibits using student data to train AI models, tracking students, and allowing AI to make decisions without human review. The protections take effect on 1 November for all school districts working with Microsoft, whether or not they actively adopt them. Districts can cancel contracts and seek damages if companies violate the rules. Union leaders said they hope OpenAI and Anthropic will sign similar agreements. Both companies have expressed willingness but haven't confirmed.

Tech giants' $1.1T AI spending spree raises cash-flow concerns as investment outpaces returns

Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet and Oracle — collectively dubbed the "Hyper 5" — have spent $1.1 trillion on capital expenditures over the past five years to build AI infrastructure, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Analyst estimates project another $5.3 trillion in spending through 2030. The investment surge is putting pressure on free cash flow. Amazon's free cash flow fell to negative $7.6 billion over the 12 months ended 30 June, from positive $18.2 billion a year earlier. Meta's second-quarter free cash flow dropped 91% to $784 million. S&P Global warns the key risk is companies transitioning from cash to debt-funded investment before returns validate the spending. However, the tech giants remain highly profitable, distinguishing this cycle from the dot-com boom.

Microsoft Outlook and OpenAI's ChatGPT Work suffer outages on same day

Microsoft's Outlook and Exchange Online services experienced a widespread outage on 31 August, with over 6,000 reports on Downdetector. Microsoft said users may experience degraded functionality whilst it reviewed service telemetry. On the same day, OpenAI's ChatGPT Work suffered a separate three-hour outage. There were no reports connecting the two incidents, though Microsoft and OpenAI remain closely tied through Microsoft's investment and Azure infrastructure support. Microsoft reported record fourth-quarter revenue of $90.01 billion, up 18% year over year. Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion annually after growing 43% in the quarter. Commercial remaining performance obligations jumped 84% to $678 billion. Microsoft 365 Copilot surpassed 30 million paid seats, with net seat additions more than doubling sequentially.

Microsoft CEO sells $43M in stock under pre-arranged plan tied to performance award

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sold approximately $43 million worth of company stock, but the transaction should not be interpreted as a bearish signal. The sale of 86,525 shares on 1 September was executed under a pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plan adopted on 8 March 2026, designed to sell shares tied to a performance-stock award. Microsoft's fundamentals remain robust. Fiscal fourth-quarter revenue increased 18% to $90 billion, whilst net income rose 31% to $35.8 billion. Azure and cloud services revenue jumped, with Microsoft Cloud revenue climbing 27% to $59.3 billion. The company added 31 new data centres during the latest quarter as part of aggressive AI infrastructure investments.
