Requirements
  • A Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Biochemical, or Petroleum Engineering from an accredited university is required.
  • At least 3 years of relevant industrial experience in chemical, petroleum, or biochemical process design engineering is required.
  • Promote safe working practices and apply safety-related concepts to process design.
  • Have basic knowledge of chemical or biochemical process engineering and chemical or biochemical process computer programs.
  • Be familiar with specifications and installation details for equipment, instrumentation, and piping.
  • Create accurate process engineering documents from vendor equipment data and drawings.
  • Have a working knowledge of computer-aided design software, such as AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Have a working knowledge of hydraulic simulation software such as AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, PIPEPHASE, PIPE-FLO, or SiNet.
  • Have a working knowledge of process simulation software such as Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics, PRO/II, DYNSIM, HYSYS, CHEMCAD, WinGEMS, or ProMax.
  • Be able to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
  • The selected candidate must be authorized to work in the United States.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in and lead cross-functional teams as required to address refinery business problems and develop engineered solutions.
  • Apply lean manufacturing and quality management methodologies to process improvement, troubleshooting, and process development.
  • Serve as a liaison between Engineering and Execution disciplines by supplying basis-of-design documents to the Capital Project group.
  • Technically assess and recommend design options that balance function and cost.
  • Interface with engineering firms on design drawings and documents, including review of data sheets and related information.
  • Identify, assess, and select process designs, with limited support for detailed design.
  • Lead front-end development of process conditions, equipment specifications, scope, cost, project timeline, and potential risks during the assess phase.
  • Collaborate with the Project Cost Estimator and Project Engineer or Project Manager to develop an initial cost estimate.
  • Create the Basis of Design Document and complete a formalized handover to the projects group.
  • Prepare markups of process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams.
  • Perform competitive scoping exercises to determine project value and scope.
  • Develop engineering scopes of work for engineering firms across project stage gates.
  • Interact with the technical team to deliver the final design and ensure the design team provides the data needed to finalize documentation.
  • Work with the project manager and vendors during the define stage gate to validate equipment details and vendor-provided drawings before construction.
  • Participate in hazard analysis to represent design intent.
  • Respond to requests for information during the execute stage gate with decision points needed to continue execution.
  • Update the unit heat and material balance as-built as part of the management-of-change process.
  • Perform initial equipment installation inspections as needed to validate construction against the design.
Desired Qualifications
  • Professional Engineering registration or CPIP certification is highly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of computer-aided design software, either AutoCAD or MicroStation, is preferred.
