Requirements
  • 10+ years’ Product Design experience, with at least 6 of those years being in a management role, and at least 2-3 years in a senior management capacity.
  • Experience in complex SaaS domains like payroll, finance or banking.
  • Management experience should include overseeing a team of 6+ designers and experience managing managers.
  • Previous scope responsibilities should include overseeing several, distinct areas of the business each with its own roadmap and stakeholders.
  • Experience leading 0-to-1 or emerging business teams.
  • A track record of strong performance management; up-leveling direct reports through leadership frameworks and raising the bar for design quality across the organization.
  • Evidence of driving transformative change to the product strategy and customer experience; showing up as a “business-minded design leader” who leads their teams to deliver substantial impact through a stellar customer experience.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity and leverage ambiguous situations as opportunities to drive clarity and change.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills with a track record of utilizing these skills to drive alignment and influence product direction.
  • Ability to inform and deliver against multiple time horizons, from multi-year strategic vision to current roadmap priorities.
  • A proven track record of leading great UX design for complex workflows and end-to-end experience visions and frameworks, while showcasing an iterative approach toward execution.
  • A master at personal time management and knowing how and when to operate at various altitudes.
  • Strong craft — you know good UX and product design, content strategy, UXR and systems design. You can break down complex experiences and design with consideration for all touch points through a Platform-first approach.
  • Shows up with strong opinions loosely held, and a willingness to engage in constructive debates about scope and tradeoffs to build alignment and unblock work.
  • You’ve built great relationships with cross functional collaborators and know how to model this for your team.

Responsibilities
  • Work with cross-functional partners in Product Management, Engineering, and Data Science to drive strategy and sequencing based on a deep understanding of customer problems and key opportunities for the customer and our business.
  • Empower designers and design managers across four teams, creating the conditions to deliver quality output and services the needs of our customers.
  • Drive the multi-year vision and develop frameworks and principles that can be used to help align our teams on the right experiences.
  • Be the catalyst to drive visibility and alignment for your teams’ work to the broader Gusto, EPD and design leadership.
  • Drive improvements to the ways of working across our overall product design team and EPD teams.
  • Collaborate with other key teams, leaders, and stakeholders at Gusto such as Legal, Compliance, Risk Operations, Customer Support, and other various product owners.
  • Ensure that proposed solutions are customer-informed through research, data, and insights from our Customer Support team.
  • Ensure the balance of an iterative approach and urgency to solve customer pain with ensuring that short term improvements ladder up to long-term vision and meet a high bar for the customer experience.
  • Hold high standards for the customer experience, including partnering with engineering leaders to refine the end customer experience and ensure that what we release is bug free, performant, accessible, and responsive.
  • Ensure cohesive experiences. through the use of Workbench, our Design System, and other platform capabilities.
  • Collaborate with design leaders on other teams to develop and drive cohesive solutions for shared problems across Gusto.
