About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 11 years of professional software development experience in TypeScript and Node.js or Python, including 5 years of architecture experience across multiple systems.
  • At least 3 years of experience owning engineering standards adopted beyond the candidate's team and mentoring senior engineers.
  • Experience working in globally distributed teams across time zones with engineering, product, and business stakeholders in other regions.
  • Expertise in TypeScript with Node.js or Python, and practical experience in the other backend language.
  • Experience defining backend and frontend coding patterns, framework choices, upgrade paths, and working in at least two additional technical crafts.
  • Experience with React and setting full-stack conventions for logic placement, APIs serving user interfaces, and shared component development and maintenance.
  • Experience designing REST APIs with OpenAPI, including resource modelling, HTTP semantics, pagination, error formats, versioning, idempotency, and rate limiting; knowledge of JSON and Protocol Buffers and their evolution.
  • Fluency in PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, query plans, transactions, and zero-downtime migrations using Prisma, TypeORM, or SQLAlchemy; experience designing DynamoDB and MongoDB models, using Redis for caching, and selecting stores for workloads.
  • Experience designing asynchronous event-driven systems using queues and streams such as SQS, Kafka, and BullMQ or Celery; knowledge of retries, dead-letter queues, idempotent consumers, outbox and saga patterns, orchestration, and choreography.
  • Experience building and operating production services on AWS or GCP using Lambda functions and Kubernetes workloads, and understanding their operational trade-offs.
  • Experience defining infrastructure as code using Terraform or AWS CDK and releasing safely with canary and blue/green deployments.
  • Experience with test-driven development and balanced test suites, including unit testing with Jest, Vitest, or pytest; integration testing with Testcontainers; contract testing with Pact; and Playwright end-to-end testing.
  • Experience instrumenting services with OpenTelemetry and using Datadog and CloudWatch; profiling with flame graphs, measuring p95 and p99 latency, and addressing root causes.
  • Knowledge and application of the OWASP Top 10 and API Security Top 10; experience designing authentication and authorisation with OAuth 2.0 and OIDC, securing service-to-service traffic with mTLS and workload identity, and integrating identity providers such as Okta, Keycloak, and Cognito.
  • Experience designing systems across multiple services and teams, writing architecture decision records, owning technical roadmaps and style guides, and making evidence-based technical decisions.
  • Experience with trunk-based development, GitHub Flow, feature flags, CI/CD pipelines, deprecations, migrations, and Git, CI/CD, and dependency policies.
  • Daily use of Claude Code and understanding of large language models, including tokens, context windows, cost, structured output, embeddings, and retrieval; experience building production features with Anthropic and OpenAI SDKs, tool calling, evaluations, and agentic services with guardrails and human review.
  • Ability to communicate technical matters to engineers, product leaders, and executives; work asynchronously across locations and cultures; and proactively identify and drive solutions.
  • Ability to lead through influence, define hiring criteria, calibrate interviewers, mentor senior engineers into technical leaders, and maintain engineering standards under commercial pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Own architecture for TypeScript and Node.js or Python systems across multiple teams and set the technical roadmap for the platform.
  • Write, review, and ship production code; lead by example in test-driven development, profiling, and AI-first delivery; and address the most difficult technical problems directly.
  • Set and maintain engineering standards for API design, data, reliability, security, observability, and testing; publish style guides and reference architectures, certify teams against them, and decide on exceptions.
  • Review designs and architecture decision records across teams, challenge assumptions, and ensure decisions are evidence-based and record their trade-offs.
  • Work with Platform Engineering to decide how AWS Lambda and Kubernetes are used and own the cost, capacity, and reliability consequences.
  • Lead responses to serious production incidents and performance problems, identify root causes, and prevent recurrence.
  • Drive migrations, framework upgrades, and deprecations across codebases through completion, including switching off replaced systems.
  • Define the models, SDKs, and agentic frameworks used to build with AI, how Claude Code is used, and how AI-written code and AI features are evaluated and released.
  • Work with product, engineering, and business leaders in other regions to shape products, translate business goals into technical plans, and make trade-offs visible.
  • Set the hiring bar for full-stack engineers at every level, write interview material, calibrate interviewers, and provide recruiters with screening criteria.
  • Mentor senior engineers, develop future technical leaders, and build a community of practice through reviews, talks, and knowledge sharing.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience maintaining a widely used open-source library.
  • Experience with multi-region and disaster-recovery architecture.
  • Experience mapping engineering controls to SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
  • Experience with multi-agent systems and agentic frameworks such as LangGraph, Google ADK, or the Anthropic Agent SDK.
  • Experience running an engineering-productivity measurement programme.
  • Experience in the second backend language.
