Requirements
  • The applicant must be able to handle rare and special materials with care.
  • The applicant must have experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • The applicant must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • The applicant must be able to work in a cold environment and use ladders, book trucks, and other library equipment to retrieve and reshelve materials.
  • The applicant must be able to handwrite neatly and legibly; a handwriting sample may be requested.
  • The applicant must have good communication skills, reliability in scheduling, accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • The applicant must be able to use strong analytical skills and work and solve problems independently as well as closely with others.
  • The applicant must be able to work in a restrictive, high-security environment.
  • The applicant must be a current University of Virginia student and have Federal Work-Study eligibility.
  • The applicant must pass a background check.
  • A resume is required.
Responsibilities
  • Organize and shift archival boxes and other materials according to complex shelving arrangements.
  • Confirm call numbers against library catalog records and shelve newly cataloged archival materials.
  • Label and barcode boxes and ensure inventory accuracy.
  • Assist in preparing collection materials for transfers to off-site storage.
  • Retrieve manuscript, university archive, and rare book materials for researcher requests and reading-room use when needed.
  • Communicate with Public Services staff regarding retrieval and use of archival materials.
  • Complete individual projects for Technical Services team members as necessary.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working in a special collections library, archive, or any library setting.
  • Familiarity with the Library of Congress Classification system.
  • Experience with varied call number systems.
  • Familiarity with eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century materials.
  • Familiarity with rare book and archival principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with United States and Virginia history or American literature.
  • Foreign language skills.
