Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • National certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Hands-on experience supporting and educating breastfeeding women is required.
  • Experience evaluating services is required.
  • Understanding of computers and competence using computers and basic software programs are required.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of patients seeking lactation expertise.
  • Educate patients, families, staff, and providers about breastfeeding and provide breastfeeding support.
  • Identify and correct variances from the Breastfeeding Center Program.
  • Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate breastfeeding services consistent with the needs of breastfeeding women.
  • Implement changes to patient plans according to individual needs and prioritize and problem-solve in response to changes in patient status or condition.
  • Use pain scales and include pain assessment in patient evaluations.
  • Implement provider orders relating to breastfeeding services.
  • Participate in follow-up services and patient education.
  • Provide family-centered care.
  • Travel to other departments as needed.
  • Respond to registered nurse requests for inpatient consultation.
  • Direct and deliver breastfeeding services and supplies.
  • Develop plans of care for breastfeeding mothers.
  • Assist with or perform procedures.
  • Document assessments, interventions, patient responses, learning needs, and changes in patient condition or status.
  • Communicate patient information to providers and communicate patient and family learning needs.
  • Complete evaluations of services and program goals.
  • Make referrals.
  • Lease supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with data collection.
  • Involve Perinatal Social Work in designated patient populations.
  • Work with providers and staff to enhance their skills and understanding of the program.
  • Participate in creating and sustaining a learning environment supported by evidence-based practice and research.
  • Engage in professional and collegial interactions with peers and students.
  • Work collaboratively with peers and other healthcare providers and participate in ongoing in-service and educational seminars.
  • Mentor and educate colleagues and students.
  • Report safety-related incidents through the Midas/RDE tool in a timely manner.
  • Attend safety-related training programs and perform work safely while monitoring the work environment for safety issues.
  • Comply with applicable state and federal regulations, statutes, and company policies.
  • Keep required certifications and licenses current and valid when applicable.
  • Complete mandatory company modules and job-specific training within required time frames.
  • Maintain knowledge of Breastfeeding Center protocols, practice guidelines, and general operating practices.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Experience in program development is preferred.
  • Bilingual ability is preferred.
