Requirements
  • A high school diploma and three years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment or field, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • The ability to use hand tools and power tools for plumbing, drainage, and utility piping repairs.
  • The ability to use soldering and brazing tools and perform precision work involving metals, piping, and pressure vessels.
  • The ability to read and work with drawings and specifications.
  • The ability to work a rotating on-call or standby schedule and respond to emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • The ability to work in confined spaces, hazardous-material environments, extreme temperatures, and extreme noise.
  • The ability to wear required personal protective equipment and complete required medical and respiratory clearances and fit testing.
  • The ability to climb ladders, work from ladders and boom or crane trucks, lift and carry up to 75 pounds, push or pull a loaded maintenance cart, and drive a university vehicle or cart.
  • A valid Arizona driver's license, minimum Class D, with an acceptable driving record of five or fewer points in the most recent 39-month period.
  • The ability to respond to emergency situations and clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical, background, and fingerprint checks.
Responsibilities
  • Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including complex and precision work on utility piping systems.
  • Locate, repair, and replace malfunctioning parts using hand tools and power tools.
  • Inspect mechanical system components and use soldering and brazing tools for the design, layout, fabrication, joining, and repair of metals, piping, and pressure vessels.
  • Work with drawings and specifications.
  • Install and maintain sprinkler systems.
  • Install and repair water lines and drain lines.
  • Prioritize work based on critical-needs assessments.
  • Assist other trades as needed.
  • Travel throughout campus to various research buildings and work at other ASU campus locations as program needs require.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of lead experience in hospitals, schools, large manufacturing facilities, or commercial or industrial facilities.
  • Experience working in research laboratories, clean rooms, high bays, administrative spaces, or office spaces.
  • Experience in a higher-education work setting.
  • Experience studying plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirements and repair or replacement sequences.
  • Knowledge of welding standards such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Society of Testing and Materials standards.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical operation of pumps, boilers, cooling towers, and chillers.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials common to the plumbing and welding trades.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes.
  • Experience installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and utility piping systems.
  • Experience designing, fabricating, joining, and repairing metals, piping, equipment, and structures.
