SMT Energy secures $268M equity partnership with Climate Adaptive Infrastructure for US battery storage expansion

SMT Energy, a developer and operator of battery energy storage systems, has announced an equity partnership with Climate Adaptive Infrastructure (CAI) worth up to $268 million. This follows $32 million previously deployed by CAI into SMT assets. The investment will fund development, construction and operation of battery storage projects across the United States. Combined with tax equity and project-level debt, the capital is expected to enable infrastructure development with aggregate value significantly exceeding the equity provided. SMT's portfolio includes distributed-generation battery storage, utility-scale projects and powered land developments aimed at strengthening grid reliability. CAI's investment aligns with its strategy of supporting scalable infrastructure platforms addressing demand for resilient, lower-carbon energy solutions. Expedition Infrastructure Partners advised SMT Energy on the transaction, with Stoel Rives providing legal counsel. Orrick served as legal counsel to CAI.
