About the Company

VELCO

Owns and operates Vermont transmission grid

VELCO operates Vermont’s statewide high-voltage electric transmission grid, owning and maintaining 740 miles of transmission lines, 55 substations and related facilities, 13,000 acres of rights-of-way, a statewide emergency radio system, and a 1,600-mile fiber network that monitors and controls the system while also supporting broadband. It moves electricity from generators to local utilities and customers using real-time monitoring and control systems to coordinate operations. It stands apart because its ownership comes from 17 distribution utilities and a public benefits corporation, and its for-profit structure is designed to return cooperative-like value to owners and Vermonters, enabling coordinated regional energy planning and a unified voice on issues. Its goal is to provide a reliable high-voltage grid, maintain regional energy coordination, ensure safe and affordable electricity, and extend infrastructure to support broadband and energy resilience in Vermont.
