AuthZed provides a comprehensive authorization system for businesses. Its main product, SpiceDB, is a database-like system inspired by Google's Zanzibar model to manage fine-grained access control. It supports Fine-Grained Authorization (FGA), Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC), and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), allowing companies to define precise permissions based on product needs, attributes, or roles. The system avoids complex SQL coding for recursive and nested permission sets, enabling low-latency authorization requests and smoother scalability. AuthZed targets organizations that require sophisticated access control, such as software firms and tech companies, and typically uses a subscription or usage-based pricing model. Its goal is to help customers maintain development velocity and prevent infrastructure scaling issues while delivering user-tailored, secure authorization.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • September 2026 product pages target OpenAI, Zoom, and Workday-style enterprise buyers.
  • April 2026 launched agentic RAG authorization, aligning product demand with AI budgets.
  • March 2026 query-planner gains and stable zed 1.0.0 improve performance and developer trust.

What critics are saying

  • OpenFGA and Okta FGA attack the same Zanzibar market with vendor-neutral governance.
  • AuthZed's AI pivot ties growth to crowded, fast-changing RAG and agent buying cycles.
  • If managed Cloud stalls, SpiceDB becomes a commoditized open-source project with weak monetization.

What makes AuthZed unique

  • SpiceDB v1.56.1 anchors AuthZed's Zanzibar-grade authorization stack in 2026.
  • AuthZed Cloud offers self-service, metered authorization for apps, RAG, and agents.
  • Composable schemas and Postgres FDW make enterprise migration and adoption easier.
