About the job

Requirements
  • At least 3 years of frontend engineering experience.
  • Experience writing semantic HTML and maintainable CSS, including responsive layouts that do not depend on a framework.
  • Production experience with modern JavaScript and TypeScript used to prevent bugs.
  • Experience consuming REST or GraphQL APIs, handling failure modes, and giving backend engineers useful feedback about API usability.
  • Ability to profile slow pages, identify causes, and improve web performance, including understanding Core Web Vitals.
  • Experience with at least one frontend framework such as React, Vue, Svelte, Angular, or a comparable framework.
Responsibilities
  • Build the screens and flows specified in designs such as Figma, match them faithfully, and identify cases the designs do not cover.
  • Write semantic HTML and maintainable CSS that works responsively across target devices and browsers and adapts to changing content.
  • Handle loading, empty, error, partial-data, long-string, and slow-network states so the interface works under non-ideal conditions.
  • Meet WCAG 2.1 AA and stated accessibility expectations, including keyboard navigation, focus management, labeling, and contrast.
  • Build a reusable component library in a frontend framework with TypeScript types.
  • Establish and document frontend conventions for file structure, state management, styling, naming, and testing strategy.
  • Keep component APIs small and predictable and document each component's props and intended use.
  • Integrate the frontend with the team's API, including authentication, data fetching, caching, optimistic updates, pagination, and error handling.
  • Test endpoints against real responses during development and surface API gaps, ambiguities, and awkward payload shapes to the backend team early.
  • Type API responses end to end so contract changes fail at build time rather than in production.
  • Establish performance baselines and meet agreed Core Web Vitals targets for LCP, INP, and CLS on target devices and connection profiles.
  • Reduce bundle size through code splitting, lazy loading, and dependency discipline, and justify heavy dependencies.
  • Optimize asset delivery, including image formats and sizing, font loading, caching headers, and critical CSS.
  • Add performance measurement to CI or the deployment process to catch regressions before release.
  • Deliver a production-deployed frontend covering the agreed screens and flows.
  • Deliver a documented, typed component library with usage examples and written frontend conventions covering architecture, state management, styling, and testing.
  • Provide automated tests running in CI.
  • Provide accessibility audit results against WCAG 2.1 AA or stated expectations, with issues resolved or documented.
  • Provide a performance report showing baselines, final numbers against agreed targets, and the measurement setup.
  • Verify cross-browser and responsive behavior across target browsers and breakpoints.
  • Provide a handoff package with architecture notes, known limitations, and a walkthrough session with the team.
  • Report to the Architect or Engineering Lead and coordinate directly with the backend engineer on API contracts.
  • Provide a written status update at the close of each week covering what shipped, what is at risk, and what is needed.
  • Work in the team's repository, follow its conventions, and submit code for project-lead review before merge.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with accessibility beyond automated checks, including screen-reader testing, focus management, and correct, restrained use of ARIA.
  • Experience working directly from Figma or similar design files and collaborating with designers on gaps.
  • Familiarity with build tools such as Vite or Webpack and frontend testing tools such as Playwright or Testing Library.
  • Prior contract work owning and independently delivering a frontend scope.
