Requirements
- A current approved Alabama Board of Nursing registered nurse license or a multistate license is required, or the candidate must be able to obtain one before starting.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training is required.
- A minimum associate degree is required.
- The candidate must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
- Depending on the assigned unit, required certifications may include Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Intermediate Fetal Monitoring, and cardiac monitoring competency.
- The candidate must be able to communicate clearly and accurately, make decisions affecting others, delegate to team members and students, receive delegation, address conflict and stressful situations, and work in groups.
- The candidate must be able to use electronic mail, telephone, texting, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
- The candidate must be able to tolerate exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals, hazardous materials, and cleaning solutions while using required protective and safety equipment.
- The candidate must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly; tolerate prolonged standing and walking; reach, stand, walk, kneel, bend, sit, stoop, run in an emergency, and lift, push, pull, and carry objects.
- The candidate must be able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation, work prolonged shifts, and have normal or corrected hearing and vision.
- Physical presence on site is essential.
- Every other weekend is required, including Saturday and Sunday.
Responsibilities
- Assess each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, age-related, and discharge-planning needs.
- Plan, provide, and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
- Evaluate and regularly reevaluate patient care and coordinate care planning with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
- Assign and delegate nursing care to team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities.
- Apply safety principles when providing care.
- Accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
- Provide accurate handoff reports and participate in unit-based huddles.
- Assist with performance-improvement activities, including serving on performance-improvement teams, assisting with performance-improvement measures, and implementing necessary changes.
- Perform initial and annual competency assessments for the applicable job class.
- Maintain professional nursing practice standards and create positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Supervise LPNs, patient care assistants, unit secretaries, orthopedic technicians, and other non-licensed staff.
- Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
- Perform compliance requirements and adhere to DCH Health System policies, procedures, and behavioral standards.
- Perform essential job functions in a manner that promotes safety and identify and reduce unsafe practices, risks, and hazards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
