Requirements
  • A high school diploma is required.
  • One year of closely related clinical experience or training/coursework in optometry, ophthalmology, or a related field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Candidates must have or obtain CPR certification.
  • Candidates must have knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology, basic tonometry, ophthalmic equipment maintenance and simple repairs, and ocular injuries and urgent care.
  • Candidates must have basic knowledge of ocular pharmacology, including the purpose, administration, dosage, duration, common side effects, and shelf-life policies for medications used during eye examinations.
Responsibilities
  • Gather necessary information for the physician, perform initial patient screening, workups, and assessments, and perform diagnostic testing needed to care for patients according to their eye-related problems and subspecialty.
  • Obtain, perform, or check ocular history, vital signs, visual acuity, glasses neutralization, automated refractions, pupillary examinations, confrontational fields, ocular motility, and intraocular pressure.
  • Perform Humphrey visual field testing, corneal topographies using the Orbscan, pachymetry, contact lens insertion and removal instruction, potential acuity meter testing, laser interferometry, and brightness acuity testing.
  • Perform clinical-clerical office duties, including scheduling, completing request forms, printing results, ordering contact lenses, and other department-required administrative activities.
  • Stock rooms according to practice needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification by the registry of the Joint Commission of Allied Health in Personnel Ophthalmology or another nationally recognized professional certifying body is preferred.
