BlackRock manages money for pension funds, governments, insurers, and everyday savers, and sells the software it uses to run those investments to other firms. In 2009, its purchase of Barclays Global Investors brought in the iShares fund family and made BlackRock the world's largest asset manager. Its iShares exchange-traded funds trade like stocks and mostly track market indexes, while its private funds lend to companies and invest in infrastructure and real estate. BlackRock charges a yearly fee on the money it manages, and banks, insurers, and other investors pay to use Aladdin, its system for measuring risk and running portfolios. Larry Fink and seven partners founded BlackRock in 1988, and it is based in New York City.

BlackRock chief executive officer Larry Fink warned on Wednesday that a moratorium on data centres would push the US into recession. He told CNBC that "a moratorium of some sort in this country" would hurt because much of the economy is tied to data centre investment. Fink called most fears about the buildout "misinformation" and said data centres "are not the problem." He said they create demand for construction workers, energy infrastructure, and AI computing hardware. A Pew Research Center survey found at least 49% of Americans say data centres are mostly bad for the environment, home energy costs, and quality of life nearby. McKinsey expects global data centre investment to reach almost $7 trillion by 2030, with more than 40% in the US. BlackRock reported third-quarter net income of $2.6 billion, beating expectations.
BlackRock will take over management of the CenterWell senior primary care centres, under an agreement with majority owner Humana. It will buy the stake held by private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe (WCAS), which Humana said is a $2.8 billion position. BlackRock will be majority owner of 150 clinics that WCAS developed and operated under a 2022 deal with Humana. CenterWell, which has more than 350 centres in 12 states, will keep operating independently. BlackRock plans new investments, including new centres and possible buyouts of competitors. CenterWell may buy back the clinics from 2028, but cannot be forced to. The old WCAS deal had such a "put" provision. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year.
BlackRock beat third-quarter forecasts, helped by performance fees of $630 million, about $200 million above analyst estimates. Most of the jump came from a single hedge fund that measures its results once a year, in the third quarter. Adjusted earnings per share rose 38% to $15.93. Clients added $205 billion, and assets reached a record $15.5 trillion. Crypto stakes also helped. BlackRock booked an $80 million gain on Securitize and a $22 million gain on Circle, both from higher valuations rather than sales. The hedge fund's next annual measurement date is not until the third quarter of 2027.
BlackRock shares rose 4% premarket on Wednesday after the New York-based money manager reported third-quarter profit and revenue that beat analyst estimates. Adjusted net income was $2.62 billion, or $15.93 per share, against expectations of $14.15. Revenue climbed 19% to $7.75 billion, compared with the roughly $7.4 billion expected. The firm attracted $205.5 billion in net new client money, above the $171.5 billion forecast. That included $78.2 billion in fixed income and $52.4 billion in stocks. Private markets drew $15.3 billion, and performance fees reached $630 million. Assets under management rose 15% year on year to a record $15.49 trillion, just below the $15.57 trillion analysts expected. Chief executive officer Larry Fink said BlackRock's ability to "originate and structure at scale" is leading to "premier financing relationships and sourcing opportunities for our clients.
