Responsibilities
  • Provide legally compliant professional advice to the business on matters including absence management, misconduct, gross misconduct, performance, FCA conduct rules, restructures, and conflict resolution.
  • Review HR policies, templates, and documentation, creating a single source of truth and streamlining a clear, consistent, accessible document portfolio.
  • Meet regularly with team leaders and managers to understand people challenges, highlight risks and issues, agree improvement actions, and escalate relevant issues to the line manager.
  • Develop and maintain HR policies, processes, and supporting documentation, including letters, to meet legal and regulatory requirements and implement improvements.
  • Operate in line with the organization's brand and values through policies, processes, and behaviours.
  • Ensure communications, including letters, are professional, consistent, and aligned with the organization's brand.
  • Support the HR team with change initiatives, including organizational change and restructuring activity.
  • Support people initiatives including the annual salary review process, biannual performance review process, employee engagement surveys, and fit and proper assessments.
  • Support compliance with employment law, the FCA's SMCR, and PRA regulations.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive information such as salary details, absence records, and disciplinary records.
  • Support administrative processes on an ad hoc basis and during peak periods, including onboarding and bank-wide communications.
  • Keep employment law knowledge up to date to support the people strategy and business objectives.
  • Support fit and proper assessments of all employees in line with FCA/PRA guidelines and company policy.
  • Understand the FCA Conduct Rules, their application to employees, and reporting requirements for breaches.

Tandem Bank appoints Simon Bowen as new chief risk officer. Bowen succeeds interim CRO Richard Eager after spending nearly 10 years in risk positions at Hodge Bank. August 24, 2026 UK digital challenger Tandem Bank has hired Hodge Bank's Simon Bowen as its new chief risk officer (CRO) as part of a raft of senior leadership changes. Bowen takes over control of the bank's risk strategy from Richard Eager, who has served as interim CRO since March 2025. Bowen joins from Cardiff-based Hodge Bank, where he has overseen risk functions for nearly a decade. His earlier career includes acting as senior manager of balance sheet risk at Lloyds Bank, and over nine years at Principality Building Society. Alongside the CRO appointment, Tandem has announced several other senior hires. Kevin Purcell joins as chief people officer from Secure Trust Bank, where he held the same position, succeeding Catherine Diamond after her two-year tenure. Moreover, Tom Ellmers, with Tandem since 2022, has been promoted from savings director to managing director of deposits and digital experience, "bringing together Tandem's app, customer experience, brand, communications and marketing under one remit", says the challenger. Darvish Heshejin, formerly vice president at Selina Finance, has been appointed managing director of home improvement lending, replacing Julian Nutley. These appointments build on numerous C-Suite changes at Tandem last year, including Ryan Heaps being promoted to chief financial officer, Russell Strevens replacing Suavek Zajac as chief technology officer, and Neil Chandler's hiring as CEO. More recently, banking veteran Stephen Jones was brought on as Tandem's chair in March, succeeding Paul Pester who held the role since 2022. August 20, 2026 Tandem Bank has implemented a number of changes to its leadership team as part of preparations for its next stage of growth. Simon Bowen has been appointed the digital challenger bank's chief risk officer. He has in excess of 25 years of experience in risk and finance transformation in the UK banking industry and was previously the chief risk officer at Hodge Bank. He has also held roles at Lloyds Banking Group and Principality Building Society. The bank has also added Natalie Trist as its director of credit risk strategy. She has over 25 years' experience in credit leadership, having worked across HSBC, Close Brothers, Secure Trust Bank and Vanquis Lending Group. Bowen commented: "Tandem has established itself as one of the most credible purpose-led digital banks in the market. I'm delighted to be joining the executive team and look forward to playing my part in what comes next." Tandem Bank has appointed Kevin Purcell as its chief people officer, having previously held the same role at Secure Trust Bank. He brings over three decades of senior people leadership experience in the financial services space. In his new role at the bank, he succeeds Catherine Diamond, who served as the firm's chief people officer for two years. Previously the director of strategy and proposition, Heshejin's new role will involve scaling the firm's home improvement lending proposition as it nears £1bn in green lending, alongside leading the unveiling of its revamped marketplace proposition. From next month, Nutley will become a senior adviser to the firm, supporting Heshejin and the home improvement lending team. Nutley is the founder of Allium Money - a green lending business acquired by Tandem Bank in 2020 - and has been central to the evolution of Tandem Bank's home improvement lending proposition. Nutley added: "It has been a privilege to help build Tandem's home improvement lending business into what it is today. I'm incredibly proud of what the team has achieved and I'm looking forward to continuing to support Darvish as he takes it from strength to strength." In addition, Tom Ellmers, who has been at Tandem Bank for over four years, will expand his executive role as managing director of deposits and digital experience. Tandem hires Turner as southern account manager. Tandem Bank has appointed Lloyd Turner as southern account manager. Turner brings more than 15 years of experience in financial services, including over a decade focused on specialist mortgages. He has previously worked with a range of specialist mortgage brokerages, specialist lenders and high street lenders, giving him experience in sales, underwriting and product teams. In his new role, Turner will work directly with Tandem's intermediary partners across the south, helping brokers access the lender's specialist second charge proposition.
