Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
  • The ability to read basic maps and blueprints and use handheld GPS or tablet devices is required.
  • The physical ability to walk long distances, bend, kneel, and work outdoors in all weather is required.
  • The ability to follow safety protocols, including traffic control and personal protective equipment requirements, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Respond to and complete utility locate tickets, including 811 or One-Call requests, within required timeframes.
  • Use electromagnetic locating equipment and/or ground-penetrating radar to detect and trace underground utility lines.
  • Accurately mark utility locations using industry-standard paint colors and flags according to the APWA color code.
  • Interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and geographic information system data to verify findings.
  • Document completed locates with photos, GPS coordinates, and detailed notes.
  • Communicate with excavators, contractors, and property owners on-site.
  • Identify and report discrepancies between utility records and field conditions.
  • Maintain and calibrate locating equipment.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including traffic control and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, often independently.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior utility locating, construction, surveying, or damage prevention experience is preferred, although it is not always required and many companies provide training.
  • NULCA or state-specific locator certification is a plus, or willingness to obtain it.
  • Familiarity with electromagnetic locating equipment, including Ridgid, Vivax-Metrotech, and Radiodetection, is preferred.
  • Experience with ground-penetrating radar equipment is preferred.
  • A basic understanding of utility infrastructure, including gas, electric, telecommunications, and water/sewer, is preferred.
