$17B hedge fund Walleye expands stock-picking unit with two hires after Citadel poached its executive

Walleye Capital, the $17 billion hedge fund, has hired two executives for its equity long-short unit after chief operating officer Matt Giannini left to rejoin Citadel in September. Giannini had been in the role for less than a year. The new hires are Jordan Tanner, Balyasny Asset Management's chief equities strategist, and Anna Dev, a Millennium Management recruiter. Tanner will use artificial intelligence to improve collaboration among teams, while Dev will recruit investing talent. Both start in mid-2027. This year, the unit has added 14 external managers and plans to back three more. Outside funds now run half of its market exposure. Walleye's multistrategy fund is down 0.5% through the first three quarters of 2026, while PivotalPath's multistrategy index has returned more than 6%.

Citadel's latest weapon in the hedge fund talent war is a big boomerang hire.

Citadel's latest weapon in the hedge fund talent war is a big boomerang hire. Sep 23, 2026, 1:26 PM PT Third time's the charm. Matt Giannini, a well-known recruiter in the hedge fund industry, is returning to Ken Griffin's $76 billion Citadel for his third stint, two people familiar with the matter told Business Insider. "We're pleased to welcome Matt back to Citadel. We expect him to materially contribute to our ambitious plans to continue growing our Equities business," a spokesperson told Business Insider. A person close to the Miami-based manager said he would start in 2027. Giannini is joining from Walleye Capital, where he was the chief operating officer of the firm's equity long-short business for less than a year. Walleye declined to comment. Giannini did not respond to a request for comment. He joined Walleye from Citadel as the smaller manager grew its leadership bench, including fellow Citadel alum Tom DeAngelis, now Walleye's president, and Anil Gondi, who joined as head of equity long-short from Balyasny and oversaw Giannini. Giannini's departure from Citadel in 2024 was one of the biggest hedge fund personnel moves that year, as the war for top investors was intensifying, and those who had succeeded in recruiting the best talent were in high demand. After Giannini's 2024 exit, Citadel lost a number of executives focused on recruiting investing talent in the 12 months that followed, Business Insider previously reported. The firm's chief people officer, Sjoerd Gehring, left earlier this year as well. The manager has since replenished its business development ranks with promotions and external hires, including individuals from firms such as Verition, BlackRock, and JPMorgan, though it has not yet named a replacement for Gehring. His first stint at Citadel, which began in 2007, ended when he started at multistrategy rival Balyasny in 2012. At Dmitry Balyasny's eponymous firm, Giannini eventually became global cohead of business development before being rehired by Citadel for the first time in late 2018. By the time he left Citadel for a second time, in 2024, he rose to the rank of global head of equities business development.

Oran's successor Poletti has been a member of the group's executive board since Amrize's IPO in June 2025. He played a key role in the spin-off of the North American business from Holcim and was responsible for the financial and non-financial aspects of building the independent company. Previously, Poletti worked for Holcim for more than 20 years in the areas of M&A, finance, and strategy. Among other things, he was responsible for acquisitions in the North American roofing and building solutions business. As CFO, he will work at Amrize's operational headquarters in Chicago. In addition, Amrize appointed Dillon Cumming as head of Investor Relations. He will take up his position on September 8 and is expected to lead the global investor relations activities. Cumming comes from the asset manager Walleye Capital. Previously, he analyzed companies from the building materials industry, among others, at Morgan Stanley.

Hedge funds cut Miami investment staff despite overall growth

Several major hedge funds are reducing their investment staff in Miami despite the city's reputation as a growing finance hub. Eight multistrategy firms — including Citadel, Millennium, Point72 and Balyasny — employed 218 investment professionals in Miami in 2025, down 20 from the previous year, even as their overall investing head count grew by over 11%. Citadel, which moved its headquarters to Miami in 2022, cut 15 investment professionals there whilst adding 77 globally. Millennium reduced its Miami presence from 53 investors to 48 and consolidated from two offices to one. Only ExodusPoint and Walleye increased their Miami investment staff. Growth is instead concentrated in New York, London, Hong Kong and Dubai, according to regulatory filings.
