Canonical backs new project to translate large C codebases into safe Rust. Canonical is funding research into automated C-to-Rust translation, with AppArmor and snap-confine serving as real-world case studies. Canonical is supporting a new three-year research project to make it practical to automatically move large, mature software projects from C to Rust. The project is a partnership between Canonical and the University of Bristol in the UK, and the work is set to start later in 2026. The main goal is to build a complete platform that can translate large code repositories, sometimes with hundreds of thousands of lines of C, into safe, reliable, and maintainable Rust. However, the bigger challenge is the huge amount of mature C software already in use. Manually rewriting these projects is costly and risky, since their code often includes years of fixes, compatibility updates, performance tweaks, and hidden knowledge. Current source-to-source translators only address part of the problem. Canonical says these tools can handle a lot of code, but they often copy C structures too closely. This leads to Rust code that still relies on unsafe features, keeps C-style patterns, and needs a lot of cleanup before Rust developers would want to maintain it. LLMs face a different challenge. They can often create good, idiomatic Rust for small, clear pieces of code, but managing the context of a whole repository is much harder. Also, code that looks right may not always work the same way as the original C version. To address these challenges, the new project will use a hybrid, or 'neurosymbolic,' approach. This combines machine learning with traditional program analysis, testing, and formal methods. According to Canonical, large code repositories will first be split into smaller parts that can be translated separately while preserving key details about types, dependencies, and how the program works. The translation will use language models trained on known C-to-Rust examples, aiming to produce Rust code that uses proper Rust features instead of just copying C syntax. After translation, the new code will be checked to see if it behaves like the original C version. For Ubuntu users, it's important to note that the research will go beyond small academic examples. Canonical plans to use AppArmor and snap-confine as real-world case studies. However, Canonical makes it clear that AppArmor and snap-confine are not being rewritten in Rust right now. These projects are only being used as case studies to test the technology, and there is no plan to replace their current versions with the research results. Finally, just to add that the initiative also fits into Canonical's broader adoption of Rust within Ubuntu. Ubuntu's hardware enablement (HWE) initiative has introduced backported virtualization technologies for users of the current Long Term Support (LTS) release. This new virtualization HWE stack enables users to access newer versions of QEMU, libvirt, and other related firmware without relying on third-party repositories. According to Canonical's Ijlal Loutfi, this advancement provides companies the reliability of an LTS release along with access to updates for virtualization when needed. The HWE system is designed to bring newer versions of the Linux kernel, GPU drivers, and select foundational software from the latest Ubuntu release to older LTS releases. These updates are rolled out every six months, integrating well-tested packages from interim releases into the LTS iterations. For instance, the kernel and GPU driver updates from the upcoming Ubuntu 26.10 release will be integrated into the 26.04.2 HWE update in early 2027. Details of the ubuntu virtualization HWE. Ubuntu has long provided hardware enablement "HWE" stacks for Ubuntu LTS releases to provide a newer kernel and Mesa drivers and more for better supporting new/modern hardware on the long-term support Ubuntu Linux releases. With Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Canonical will also now be providing a virtualization HWE stack for shipping newer virtualization / confidential computing features. Due to AMD and Intel continuing to upstream new SEV-SNP and Trust Domain Extensions (TDX) features, respectively, there are now plans for a virtualization hardware enablement stack on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Future Ubuntu 26.04 LTS point releases will ship with updated versions of QEMU, libvirt, EDK2, and SeaBIOS via new "-hwe" post-fixed packages. This is for complementing the HWE Linux kernel in order to support the latest AMD and Intel virtualization features on servers, especially around confidential computing. The Ubuntu virtualization HWE stack is planned to be upgraded every six months to match the latest upstream versions supported in Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu 26.10 to include Ubuntu certified hardware check. Jul 27, 2026 Jack Wallen If you've ever wondered if your laptop or PC is officially certified to run Ubuntu, that curiosity will soon be met. Starting with Ubuntu 26.10 (Stonking Stingray), there will be a new feature in Settings | System that allows you to find out if your hardware is certified to run the Ubuntu OS. When you click the button to verify your hardware, it runs the com.ubuntu.hwctl service. You can also run the command hwlib (available starting in 26.10), which will return the same results (only in the terminal instead of a GUI). There are six different statuses that can be returned: Ubuntu certified, certified for a different Ubuntu version, not certified but similar to a model that is, not certified, unable to check, and status unknown. I have an instance of the daily release of Ubuntu 26.10, and the feature has yet to appear, but according to OMG Ubuntu, the certified hardware check is coming. The site also indicates that there will be an option to enable regular checks, which will send your hardware details to Canonical to check on your certification status. Apparently, the change will appear in gnome-control-center 1:51~alpha-0ubuntu2. After running an upgrade to the daily installation, it broke the desktop (part of the fun with running a daily release), so I'll have to re-install Stonking Stingray again to see if I can finally test the feature.
