Samsung Canada asks reviewers to revisit first foldable verdicts with Galaxy Z Fold8

Samsung Canada is asking Canadians to rethink their first impressions of foldable phones, eight years after the Galaxy Fold launched in 2019. Early critics called the devices too experimental and fragile. Technology reviewers Karl Conrad, Unbox Therapy, and Linus Media Group are revisiting their original foldable reviews with the latest Galaxy Z Fold8. Conrad's "Re-Review" tests whether his earlier prediction that folding phones were a passing fad still holds. More videos will appear on the reviewers' channels throughout November. The campaign builds on Samsung Canada's Ask Us Anything initiative. "Many Canadians who are discovering foldables today have the same questions that consumers and reviewers asked at the beginning," said Tarik Akad, vice president of mobile experience at Samsung Canada.

South Korea's finance minister bets chip boom lasts through 2027 as Samsung profit hits $80B

South Korea's finance minister, Lee Hyoung-il, expects the chip boom to outlast last week's selloff and run at least through 2027. He told CNBC on October 17, 2026, that "the gap between demand and supply for semiconductors is still very wide." SK Hynix shares fell about 10% in Seoul on October 13 on fears of rate hikes and Chinese competition. Samsung and SK Hynix make up about half of the Kospi index. Their profits are driving record tax revenue. Samsung expects about 107.4 trillion won ($80 billion) in third-quarter operating profit, nearly nine times last year's figure. Seoul's 2027 budget counts on about 580 trillion won ($430 billion) in tax revenue.

GENIUS Act cleared path for Samsung's Solana-powered USDC transfers to 82M US Galaxy phones

Samsung will add stablecoin transfers to Samsung Wallet, starting the last week of October for eligible US Galaxy users. The feature reaches about 82 million phones and will use Solana for settlement. Users can send USDC to compatible crypto wallets in seconds with no transfer fees, or to eligible bank accounts in more than 60 countries. Solana and Sui provide the network, Bastion handles transfers, and Coinbase Prime safeguards the USDC. Lu Yin, head of APAC at the Solana Foundation, said the GENIUS Act, signed July 18, 2025, spurred companies to enter the field. The law created the first federal framework for payment stablecoins. Yin said the rollout will come in stages, focused first on adoption among people new to crypto.

Samsung exec: $100B US investment shows lasting value is built beyond factories

Samsung is preparing to open a new advanced semiconductor plant in Taylor, Texas, building on nearly 30 years of chip manufacturing in Central Texas. Hundreds of employees began working at the campus last year, and the company has expanded partnerships with local schools and colleges to train a new workforce. Samsung has invested more than $100 billion in the US over nearly five decades. Its US facilities generate more than $40 billion in economic impact and support more than 175,000 jobs. The company says lasting investment needs skilled workers, growing suppliers, and institutions that prepare people for new work. Its Newberry, South Carolina, appliance plant, opened in 2017, has generated more than $900 million in economic impact. Since 2010, more than 620,000 students have joined its Solve for Tomorrow STEM programme, which reaches more than 4,300 schools.

Samsung to start building second Taylor chip plant next month as first fab nears $17B launch

Samsung Electronics will begin building its second plant in Taylor, Texas, next month as demand grows for chips used in artificial intelligence. The company expects the second fab to be operational by 2030. Samsung's first fab remains on track to come online by the end of the year, about five years after it announced the $17 billion project. The plant will make 2-nanometre chips, the first in the US to do so. Tesla is its only officially named customer, with a $16.5 billion deal. Samsung also highlighted more than $22.8 million in community investments, including $10.7 million for nonprofit and city groups and $10.64 million for workforce programmes. The company plans up to 10 plants on more than 1,200 acres.
