  • Strong Python and SQL, and experience building and monitoring production pipelines using PySpark or Apache Spark.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, continuous integration and continuous delivery, and a Git and GitHub workflow.
  • A track record of setting engineering standards and design patterns, conducting architectural review, and producing design documentation that others build from.
  • Experience owning delivery of technical workstreams, including technical workplanning, capacity management, quality assurance, and early escalation of risk.
  • Experience mentoring or managing engineers, including objective setting and development.
  • Experience designing to regulated data requirements such as NHS Information Governance, ISO 27001 and GDPR, or comparable frameworks.
  • Ability to explain design decisions and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience acting as the technical authority for platform and infrastructure decisions and as the engineering team's reference point.
  • Experience participating confidently in commercial and partner-facing technical discussions, including vendor conversations and the technical sections of proposals.
Responsibilities
  • Produce detailed technical designs for the company's cloud infrastructure, including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Databricks, and NHS data pipelines within the strategic architecture set by the Director.
  • Define integration patterns, data-flow designs and component specifications for implementation by the data engineering team.
  • Make implementation-level technology decisions about tooling, frameworks and configuration approaches within the Director's strategic technology selections.
  • Design scalable, secure platform architectures supporting multi-region operations across the United Kingdom, Middle East and European Union and complying with NHS Information Governance, ISO 27001 and GDPR requirements.
  • Own and maintain platform design documentation, reference architectures and decision records.
  • Evaluate emerging platform technologies and recommend adoption to the Director with supporting technical assessments.
  • Own day-to-day delivery management of platform and data engineering workstreams in line with the unified function's strategy and priorities.
  • Develop and maintain technical workplans for platform initiatives, coordinating sequencing and dependencies with the Director and Lead Data Scientists.
  • Manage the data engineering team's capacity across concurrent workstreams, balancing platform development, Data Operations support and client delivery contributions.
  • Coordinate quality assurance and testing for platform components and ensure work meets quality standards before release.
  • Identify and escalate delivery risks, resource constraints and scope changes to the Director with sufficient lead time.
  • Ensure platform workstreams are delivered to agreed timelines and within resource constraints.
  • Define and maintain engineering standards, design patterns and reference implementations for the data platform.
  • Conduct architectural reviews of platform changes before development to ensure design coherence and technical soundness.
  • Contribute to the build-quality assurance process for platform components by embedding quality gates in delivery.
  • Design the security architecture for platform components in line with the Director's Information Governance framework and ISO 27001 requirements.
  • Identify and communicate technical risks and architectural trade-offs with clear recommendations.
  • Provide technical expertise for partnership opportunities with platform vendors such as Databricks.
  • Support the Director in technical discussions with data and research organisations where platform architecture or data infrastructure expertise is required.
  • Contribute to technical sections of proposals and client-facing materials involving platform architecture, infrastructure design or data engineering capability.
  • Work closely with Lead Data Scientists to ensure the platform and infrastructure supports client-facing data science delivery.
  • Advise data scientists, consulting teams and Data Operations colleagues on platform capabilities, constraints and best-practice usage.
  • Provide technical input to the Director on infrastructure implications of new data products, client requirements and commercial initiatives.
  • Mentor and help scope and support data engineers' work, including objective setting, performance and development input, and technical day-to-day support.
  • Act as a technical reference point for the engineering team on platform architecture, cloud infrastructure and system design.
  • Develop and deliver internal learning content on platform architecture, design patterns and infrastructure best practice.
  • Mentor engineers on architectural thinking and help the team develop design capability over time.
  • Support the Director in defining the technical career track and progression requirements for data engineering roles.
  • Contribute to the company's technical learning programme as faculty for relevant platform and infrastructure topics.
Desired Qualifications
