Requirements
  • Applicants should be college juniors, or graduate students enrolled in a degree program by the application deadline and returning to school in the fall; graduating seniors should apply to WSJ News Associates.
  • Applicants should have an analytical approach to journalism and experience cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing data to support reporting.
  • Applicants should be able to scrape and mold unstructured data using Python, R, and SQL.
  • Applicants must have completed at least one prior reporting internship with another professional media organization, or published exceptional data, visual, or open-source investigative work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an interest in business reporting; prior business or finance reporting experience is not required.
  • Applicants must submit one PDF document no larger than 5 MB containing a cover letter, résumé, and three examples of data, OSINT, and visual investigative reporting work, with links to interactive projects, published graphics, or code repositories and an outline of their role or contribution.
Responsibilities
  • Contribute reporting, data analysis, open-source reporting, and visual verification to investigative projects and quicker-turn visual stories.
  • Work cross-functionally with reporters and editors across the newsroom.
  • Develop audience-first visual storytelling using maps, video, satellite imagery, and interactive graphics.
  • Analyze large datasets and use open-source intelligence to verify digital evidence and uncover information while maintaining rigorous editorial standards.
  • Pitch visually strong journalism, including data-driven interactives, maps, charts, and explanatory graphics, and help experiment with AI-powered reporting workflows.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with JavaScript, D3.js, 3D modeling, animation, video editing, and open-source reporting techniques such as geolocation and video and photo verification is a significant bonus.
