Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • For phlebotomy assignment, completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended.
  • At least two years of experience as a Clinical Tech I, or certification as a Phlebotomist plus achievement of the required competency level for specified job responsibilities, is required.
  • For assignment to Phlebotomy Services, certification as a Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board or agency may be required.
  • Pediatric phlebotomy experience is required.
  • Basic phlebotomy and specimen processing techniques are required.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Effective professional communication skills are required to interact with patients and customers.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare and initiate special tests and procedures, including cytogenetics, general laboratory testing, Point-of-Care Testing, urinalysis without a microscope, phlebotomy, and specimen management.
  • Obtain total urine volume, aliquot and distribute urine specimens, determine urine volume, and label aliquot containers.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and medical personnel to identify problems, initiate resolutions, and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit patient cooperation.
  • Maintain positive patient identification and clinical laboratory records, register and accession patients and specimens, and perform order entry.
  • Perform quality control, safety, and infection control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Receive and process specimens according to laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Receive specimens into the laboratory using Beaker.
  • Identify patient specimens, verify labels and requisitions, ensure valid orders, and sort specimens.
  • Distribute specimens, supplies, and reports to appropriate laboratory staff and perform messenger or courier activities.
  • Maintain supply inventory, stock carts and hand trays, and wash glassware.
  • Use hospital information systems and software.
  • Assist with maintenance of specimens and slides.
  • Perform routine maintenance required by laboratory procedures.
  • Assist with word processing, miscellaneous office tasks, and office record maintenance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification of Basic Life Support is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terms is preferred.
