About the job
- At least six months of experience working in a veterinary hospital as a veterinary assistant.
- Fluent English speaking and reading skills are required.
- Clinical skills and experience must include safe patient restraint, phlebotomy and catheter placement, knowledge of radiology safety and proper technique, and a solid foundation in common veterinary medications.
- Working knowledge of veterinary procedures and pharmacology.
- Working knowledge of veterinary terminology.
- Greet guests and customers respectfully.
- Check in patients and provide introductory information to new customers.
- Obtain patient histories, vital signs, and weights; record the information in the chart and communicate it to the doctor of veterinary medicine.
- Work with customer service representatives and other departments to find appropriate solutions.
- Collect payment for services rendered.
- Keep the reception area and exam rooms clean and odor-free; clean and stock exam rooms and the client restroom as needed, or alert the custodian.
- Verify that client information is up to date and accurate in the system.
- Answer and transfer calls on a multi-line telephone in a friendly and professional manner.
- Discharge surgical patients and answer questions about procedures, medications, and aftercare.
- Take messages from clients or referring veterinarians when appropriate and make callbacks in EzyVet.
- Assist with patient restraint, blood draws, and radiology.
- Calculate and fill prescriptions according to veterinarians’ instructions.
- Email home-care instructions, referral reports, and medical notes from procedures and hospital visits to referring veterinarians.
- Gather forms and take-home items, and verify invoices and instructions before discharge.
- Scan faxed laboratory results into patient medical records and email copies to the appropriate doctor of veterinary medicine.
- Scan referring-veterinarian records, forms, laboratory results, and other documents into patient files.
- Check voicemail messages.
- Maintain and provide information about no-shows, rescheduled appointments, and canceled appointments.
- Keep the reception desk and area tidy and clean, and clean up pet accidents in the waiting room.
- File client and referring-veterinarian correspondence, intensive-care-unit sheets, faxed records, and other documents in patient files in chronological order.
- Operate office machines, including a postage scale, fax machine, computer, printer, photocopier, credit card machine, and scanner.
