Requirements
  • An Associate's degree and 1 year of related experience involving direct patient contact are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified Optician-ABO certification and a New York State license are required upon hire.
  • NCLE Certification is required upon hire for opticians who will participate in fittings.
Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive patient care related to patient evaluation, prescription recommendation, eyewear selection, fitting and purchase, and coordination with other health care professionals.
  • Fill ophthalmic eyeglass prescriptions specified by an MD or OD and make final eyewear adjustments to the patient's satisfaction.
  • Evaluate prescriptions in consideration of patients' vocational and recreational visual requirements, and recommend lenses, including contact lenses, lens coatings, and frames.
  • Measure patients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, papillary distance, and optical centers using a millimeter rule and light reflex pupillometer.
  • Determine patients' current lens prescriptions using a lensometer or lens analyzer and their current eyeglasses.
  • Complete administrative and customer service tasks, including patient invoicing, cash handling, and financial arrangements with patients or responsible third parties.
  • Coordinate service support, including inventory, equipment maintenance and repair, requisitioning supplies and materials, and recommending equipment expenditures to management.
  • Initiate expenditures for routine supplies and maintenance at management's direction.
  • Use specialized software to maintain the customer database and report financial transactions.
  • Assist patients in selecting frames based on style, color, facial and eye measurements, and ophthalmic prescriptions.
  • Instruct patients in adapting to, wearing, and caring for eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Prepare work orders, including instructions for grinding, coating, and fabricating eyeglasses.
  • Perform finish lens grinding and communicate processing work to laboratory technicians as needed to fulfill work orders to specification.
  • Verify that finished lenses have been ground and fabricated to specification.
  • Heat, shape, or bend plastic or metal frames using hands, pliers, or other tools and materials to adjust eyeglasses to fit patients.
  • Perform lens finishing work as needed.
  • Maintain retail inventory by meeting with sales representatives and ordering frames, lenses, and other supplies.
  • Create merchandise displays to support purchases.
  • Maintain inventory using sales management software.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with optical labs, finish laboratories, and suppliers to purchase inventory, obtain equipment and product information, and resolve equipment or product problems.
  • Participate in trunk shows throughout the University with Marketing and in special sale events at selected University locations.
  • Attend Optician vendor shows, exhibitions, and trade shows as needed to stay current with ophthalmic retail trends and purchase supplies.
  • Fit and dispense contact lenses when needed.
  • As a Contact Lens Specialist, perform pre-fitting, preparation and evaluation, diagnostic fitting and evaluation, lens dispensing, patient education and delivery procedures, patient follow-up visits, and related administrative tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • A Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience are preferred.
