Nvidia-Branded trailers stolen in California, thieves find 20 tons of sand instead of AI hardware. The incident highlights the growing attention surrounding Nvidia's branding amid increasing demand for AI hardware and the rising value of advanced computing equipment. Published on: 04 Oct 2026, 11:27 pm Two Nvidia-branded trailers were stolen from the facility of autonomous trucking company PlusAI in Fremont, California, in what appears to have been an attempted theft of high-value technology equipment. However, the thieves reportedly discovered that the trailers were not carrying expensive AI hardware but around 20 tons of sand used for autonomous vehicle testing. The incident highlights the growing attention surrounding Nvidia's branding amid increasing demand for AI hardware and the rising value of advanced computing equipment. Thieves Apparently Mistook Trailers for Valuable AI Cargo The two trailers were reportedly taken from the docks of PlusAI's Fremont warehouse late Wednesday. One of the trailers prominently displayed both Nvidia and PlusAI branding, reflecting the companies' work together in autonomous trucking and AI technology. PlusAI uses sand inside its trailers to replicate the weight and conditions of real freight while testing its self-driving truck systems. Each trailer contained approximately 20,000 pounds of sand. According to PlusAI Vice President of Marketing Lauren Kwan, the prominent branding may have led the thieves to believe that the trailers contained valuable technology equipment. The trailers were discovered missing the following morning, with the company reporting the incident to the Fremont Police Department. Investigators found that the locks securing the trailers appeared to have been forced open, while PlusAI's tractor cabs parked elsewhere at the facility were left untouched. Trailers Recovered After Unexpected Tip The stolen trailers were recovered within hours of the theft following an unusual coincidence. PlusAI's vice president of legal received a message from a friend who had spotted two company-branded trailers outside an office in nearby Newark. The friend apparently was unaware that the trailers had been stolen and sent a photograph along with a congratulatory message. PlusAI employees travelled to the location, identified the trailers and contacted police. Newark police subsequently recovered both vehicles and returned them to the company. According to the reports, the thieves appeared to have opened the trailers, discovered that they contained no valuable equipment and abandoned them. The sand reportedly remained inside. Nvidia Branding Draws Attention The incident comes amid growing concerns around the theft of expensive AI hardware and data-centre equipment in the US. Nvidia's processors have become highly sought-after components as companies invest heavily in AI infrastructure, potentially making Nvidia-branded equipment an attractive target for criminals. However, the stolen trailers did not contain Nvidia chips or other AI hardware. The sand was being used purely as simulated freight to help PlusAI test its autonomous trucking technology. The incident also illustrates how prominent technology branding can create assumptions about the value of equipment, even when the actual cargo is unrelated to high-value hardware. The Fremont Police Department is continuing to investigate the theft, and no arrests had been reported at the time of the reports. Nvidia GPU heist ends with the most disappointing score. Photo Credit: Coolcaesar/Wikimedia Commons By Paris Apodaca Thieves looking to strike artificial intelligence gold stole Nvidia-branded trailers in California last week - but their haul turned out to be 40,000 pounds of sand. The thieves stole two trailers bearing Nvidia and autonomous trucking company PlusAI logos outside the companies' Newark, California, facility, according to WIRED. But instead of graphics processing units (GPUs) or other artificial intelligence equipment, each trailer was loaded with roughly 20,000 pounds of sand. Nvidia and PlusAI have partnered to develop autonomous trucking technology, with the sand used to simulate cargo loads during testing, WIRED reported. The thieves allegedly broke the trailers' hand locks before taking them, but abandoned the trailers roughly half a mile away. PlusAI recovered both trailers and their decidedly less valuable cargo. Nvidia did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation's request for comment. The expensive part of the operation was left untouched. PlusAI's autonomous trucks, which contain the technology used for testing, were parked inside the facility. The theft comes as criminals increasingly target high-value computer hardware amid booming demand for AI and data center equipment. Cargo thieves stole an estimated $304.6 million worth of goods during the second quarter of 2026, more than double the $135.7 million reported during the same period last year, according to Verisk CargoNet. Organized groups have increasingly targeted enterprise-grade computers, networking equipment, components and cryptocurrency mining hardware, CargoNet reported. Such shipments can be worth millions of dollars while moving through the supply chain as ordinary freight, leaving expensive technology potentially vulnerable to theft. The Nvidia thieves, however, walked away without any of it. Fremont police are investigating the theft, and no arrests have been made, according to WIRED. Thieves end up with 20 tons of sand used to simulate freight after stealing Nvidia branded trailers from autonomous trucking company. Published: September 28, 2026 Thieves in California ended up with loads of nothing but sand after stealing two Nvidia branded trailers from an autonomous trucking company in California. Workers at the PlusAI warehouse in Fremont, California discovered that two of their trailers had been stolen just after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 24th. According to San Francisco Standard, both trailers were branded with Nvidia logos on the side, but were only loaded with a combined 20 tons of sand to simulate real freight during research and development of the autonomous trucks. The employees that contacted police reported that the trucks and trailers had been forcibly separated and the truck cab was moved. Besides the trailers being gone, there was nothing else on the property that appeared to have been tampered with. Security footage also revealed two unknown semi trucks driving around the property. "Those were not our tractors. Those were from the thieves," said VP of Marketing Lauren Kwan. As the company was filing police and insurance reports on the stolen trailers, PlusAI's VP of Legal received a text from a friend with a photo attached showing the trailers parked outside of an office in Newark, California; not far from the warehouse they'd been stolen from. "I have been proud of you for your adventure and success at Plus," the friend wrote. "Just saw two of your trucks near my work place! :)" The company sent over some employees to confirm the trailers were really theirs, and called police to help them recover the trailers. The company says that the trailer doors had been broken into, but all of the simulated cargo sand was still inside. The company says they believe the Nvidia branding on the side of the trailers prompted the thieves to steal them, assuming there was valuable cargo inside. "The very apparent branding probably made them think there was very valuable equipment back there," said Kwan. The case is still under investigation and no arrests have been made. Self-driving truck firm PlusAI takes third run at listing, this time at $800M. Autonomous trucking software developer Plus Automation Inc., known as PlusAI, said today it will go public through a merger with blank-check company Texas Ventures Acquisition III Corp. at a pre-money equity value of about $800 million. That makes three attempts at a listing in five years. Hennessy Capital Investment Corp. V agreed in May 2021 to take the company public at a valuation of about $3.3 billion for the combined company, but the two sides scrapped the deal six months later. Churchill Capital Corp IX tried next, announcing a $1.2 billion combination in June 2025 and terminating it on April 20. Market conditions were the stated reason. About $236 million sits in the Texas Ventures III trust, though redemptions could cut into that. A further $60 million or so is committed, most of it through five-year senior guaranteed convertible notes with $63.9 million in principal and $57.5 million in net proceeds, carrying warrants exercisable at $12, alongside roughly $4 million in equity and warrant subscriptions from accredited investors. Funds managed by Yorkville Advisors Global LP, which backs Texas Ventures III, are among the investors. PlusAI said the committed financing satisfies the minimum cash condition to close, and the transaction funds the business through 2027. PlusAI's revenue to date comes from HyperFoundry, the development platform the company built to create and validate its own autonomous systems. Other firms working on autonomous and robotic products can now license it. The platform draws on a decade of accumulated driving data, models and simulation capability. That business booked $25 million this year, and contracted revenue across the company is targeted at $40 million to $50 million for 2026. The company's self-driving software, called SuperDrive, is built with those same tools and rated Level 4, a classification meaning the system handles all driving within a defined operating area with no human expected to take over. Trucks running it are hauling freight on routes in Texas with Ryder System Inc. and truck manufacturer International Motors LLC. PlusAI plans to sell access on a subscription it calls Driver-as-a-Service. At scale, the company estimates the business could produce more than $1 billion in annual recurring revenue, against a trucking industry it sizes at $1.7 trillion. The trucks themselves come from established manufacturers. PlusAI has integration agreements with TRATON SE, Hyundai Motor Co. and Iveco Group N.V., and factory-built trucks with SuperDrive installed are targeted for commercial launch in 2027. TRATON committed up to $25 million in dedicated research funding in January to speed that work along. Chief Executive David Liu said the transaction "validates a year of significant execution and operational milestones." The data, models and simulation capability built over the past decade are being monetized now, he said, while SuperDrive advances toward its launch. Conviction in the deal is "reflected in the capital we are committing alongside the transaction," said Troy Rillo, chief executive of Texas Ventures III. Both boards approved the agreement unanimously. Closing is expected this year, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval, after which existing PlusAI stockholders and the Texas Ventures III sponsor will be subject to lock-ups. The combined company will operate as PlusAI. Photo: PlusAI.
