About the job

Requirements
  • At least 7 years of experience building and operating production backend or distributed systems, with demonstrated ownership of architecture and delivery across services and teams.
  • Experience building developer platforms, software development kits, or internal tooling used by other engineers to ship production software; external API integrations are preferred, and API usability, documentation, and compatibility should be treated as part of the product.
  • Strong skills in application programming interface design, data modeling, asynchronous workflows, schema evolution, eventual consistency, and idempotent processing.
  • Ability to turn varied external application programming interfaces into reusable connector patterns with clear boundaries and testable contracts, including experience with automated integration testing and development environments.
  • Demonstrated production ownership, including observability, on-call support, incident investigation, and improvements that prevent recurring failures; ability to show improved reliability or reduced integration effort.
  • Deep proficiency in Go, Python, or a comparable backend language, with experience building libraries, command-line tools, or developer workflows that make other engineers productive.
  • Experience building or supporting frontend libraries, software development kits, or embedded customer experiences, and ability to reason about client-side integration, authentication, error handling, and usability in partner applications.
  • Ability to define architecture and engineering standards across distributed engineering teams, enable independent execution through documentation and technical review, and align Product, Commercial, Finance, and Operations around platform priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience representing engineering in discussions with senior leaders at enterprise customers or partners, explaining technical tradeoffs in business terms, making clear recommendations, and driving decisions with technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Track record of aligning customer expectations with engineering capacity and platform strategy, constructively challenging requests, communicating difficult news early, and building agreement on a credible path forward.
  • Use of artificial intelligence tools to improve implementation, testing, debugging, and review while taking responsibility for correctness, security, and maintainability.
Responsibilities
  • Represent Zipline in partner leadership discussions about technical strategy, launch readiness, and delivery risks; translate complex issues into clear business implications, recommendations, and decisions.
  • Work with Commercial, Product, and partner teams to agree on scope, success criteria, milestones, and responsibilities; surface dependencies early and negotiate practical tradeoffs when priorities or timelines change.
  • Build frontend and backend software development kits that enable partners to build customer experiences in their own applications, along with the integration framework, connector templates, and developer tooling to deliver partner application programming interface integrations quickly and consistently.
  • Define clear interfaces between partner-specific connectors and Zipline’s core platform, keeping order lifecycle, authentication, authorization, data mapping, and monitoring consistent; establish application programming interface and software development kit versioning and compatibility practices so partners can adopt changes safely.
  • Create sandbox environments, partner application programming interface simulators, and automated contract tests so engineering teams can develop and validate integrations independently.
  • Establish integration acceptance criteria and automated release checks that verify correctness, failure handling, and operational readiness before production rollout.
  • Establish consistent retry, idempotency, and fallback behavior across partner application programming interfaces and webhooks; define service reliability goals and own monitoring, runbooks, incident response, and remediation for integration failures.
  • Lead technical reviews and mentor engineers; use recurring implementation issues to improve the framework; measure developer ramp time, integration delivery time, review effort, production defect rates, and software development kit adoption to guide investment.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience building developer platforms, software development kits, or internal tooling for external application programming interface integrations.

About the company

Zipline builds and operates autonomous drone delivery networks for retailers, restaurants and healthcare systems that need to move products without road traffic. Its electric aircraft carry food, prescriptions and other supplies from partner sites or distribution hubs to customers and health facilities. The company combines aircraft, charging equipment and delivery software with flight operations, so partners buy a logistics service rather than manage their own drones. Merchants use its ordering and tracking tools to reach customers, while governments and health systems contract for medical supply delivery. Zipline was founded in 2014 and has its headquarters in South San Francisco, California.

What believers are saying

  • Growth teams have fresh funding: Zipline raised over $600 million in January 2026 to expand delivery operations.
  • Consumer distribution is widening: Zipline announced Uber Eats integration in August 2026, with first deliveries planned later that year.
  • Operations extend beyond pilots: Zipline reported over 2.7 million completed deliveries across four continents in August 2026.

What critics are saying

  • New Texas scale is pending: Zipline's September 2026 five-metro proposal remains under FAA environmental review.
  • Bulk deliveries face a weight ceiling: Zipline's proposed Texas P2 aircraft have an eight-pound payload limit.
  • Field testing disrupts regular hours: Zipline's Esparto operator posting requires nights, weekends and occasional regional travel.

What makes Zipline unique

  • Its delivery pod steers itself: Zipline lowers an autonomous robot on a tether while the larger aircraft stays overhead.
  • Different docks share capacity: Zipline's P2 aircraft fly between docks and recharge before taking the next delivery.
  • Public health is a core customer: Zipline runs Rwanda's national blood-delivery network alongside its US consumer service.

Zipline secures 8-year Côte d'Ivoire deal to serve 12M people with drone delivery

US drone logistics company Zipline will expand operations in Côte d'Ivoire, building nine additional facilities to complement its existing site operational since 2023. The expansion aims to serve 12 million people, roughly a third of the Ivorian population, over the next eight years. During its three-year pilot programme, Zipline delivered nearly 4 million medical products — primarily vaccines and blood — to more than 200 healthcare centres in a region northwest of Abidjan. The Ivorian government will cover operating costs including pharmacy-grade warehousing, cold chain management, digital tracking, and delivery for eight years. Zipline expects the government to achieve a three-fold return on its investment, though the company declined to disclose the exact financial terms. The deal represents growing African government adoption of drone technology for delivering social services to hard-to-reach areas.
