Requirements
  • An Associate’s Degree in Iñupiaq Studies and/or Education is preferred.
  • An Alaska Teacher Certificate, Type M – Limited Certificate, is preferred.
  • Active standing in an approved Iñupiaq Studies and/or Education program is required.
  • Understand and speak some conversational Iñupiaq.
  • Have knowledge and appreciation of Iñupiaq traditions, values, and customs.
  • Have knowledge of best practices in teaching, including constructivist approaches, hands-on learning, and language development.
  • Have knowledge of or experience developing and supporting family involvement in education.
  • Understand Iñupiaq pedagogical philosophy.
  • Have knowledge of language acquisition theory and practice.
  • Be willing to engage in ongoing study of language learning, Iñupiaq language and culture, and developmentally appropriate practices for children.
  • Be willing and able to fly in small and large commuter planes.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Plan for the instructional needs of all students, attend to special student needs, and maintain high expectations for student achievement and behavior.
  • Implement district curriculum and provide instruction that promotes language development, skill development, knowledge acquisition, and reasoning.
  • Use a variety of assessments to inform instruction and create an environment that maximizes student learning.
  • Practice and apply Iñupiaq pedagogical principles.
  • Develop ongoing partnerships that enhance student learning, emphasizing partnerships with parents and the community.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and community and parent volunteers.
  • Model and teach Iñupiaq values with sensitivity to diversity.
  • Educate the whole child intellectually, spiritually, socially, culturally, emotionally, and physically.
  • Demonstrate continuous professional growth.
  • Supervise and train instructional paraprofessionals in providing services to students as needed.
  • Abide by the code of ethics and professional teaching standards adopted by the professional Teaching Practice Commission of the State.
  • Adhere to District policies and regulations.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Travel within and outside of the North Slope Borough School District.
Desired Qualifications
  • Speak Iñupiaq fluently.
