  • Speak and write clearly so laboratory data and messages are transmitted accurately and communication with physicians, requesting departments, and other staff is effective.
  • Work well under pressure.
Responsibilities
  • Receive, label, accession, and process specimens for analysis in the Clinical Laboratories, enter patient data into the computer, answer telephone inquiries about test information and results, and operate, maintain, and troubleshoot the Total Lab Automation system and TUG sample delivery system.
  • Greet people delivering specimens; enter patient data; prioritize STAT, immediate, routine, urine and body-fluid, and research/budget work; receive, sort, and verify specimen identification and test requests; consult laboratory manuals or appropriate staff when needed; resolve discrepancies and labeling problems; organize and hold specimens safely when authorization or further resolution is needed.
  • Label specimens and aliquots; prepare pour-off vials; verify computer entries against requisitions; flag and share specimens with analytical sections as appropriate; and initial requisitions when labeling is complete.
  • Centrifuge specimens using balanced loads and correct settings; separate cells or plasma; add buffers or preservatives and perform other required processing; aliquot and label samples; assess specimen quantity and quality; communicate deficiencies and document actions; store specimens appropriately; package referral-laboratory send-outs; and file requisitions for scanning.
  • Verify urine requisitions and preservatives, measure timed urine collections using the electronic scale, aliquot urine, record volume and collection hours, review stored specimens, and resolve handling problems.
  • Sort STAT specimens with labels, verify tests against requisitions, and deliver specimens to the appropriate testing sections within required timeframes.
  • Respond accurately and professionally to in-person and telephone inquiries using laboratory references, price files, computer systems, and requisitions; consult supervisors or technical staff when needed; and answer work-area telephone extensions promptly.
  • Process and package send-out tests according to instructions, prioritize drug and toxicology specimens for courier pickup, and refer tests requiring prior approval while keeping specimens safely processed and held.
  • Use Sunquest GUI Order Entry, General Lab, Smart, and Laboratory Inquiry functions to retrieve patient data and resolve specimen identification problems.
  • When computer systems are unavailable, follow the written internal crash plan, process and route specimens without computer-generated labels, and legibly handwrite requisitions and labels.
  • Perform additional duties or projects as assigned.
  • Operate the automation track as a Track Master by identifying and sorting samples, excluding unsuitable or blood bank samples from the track, receiving and delivering samples manually when needed, investigating missing or error-lane samples, archiving and retrieving samples, and troubleshooting track errors.
  • Contact vendor support, open service tickets when needed, document automation-track issues, reboot modules or the track for troubleshooting, and follow manual sample-retrieval procedures when the storage module is unavailable.
  • Perform automation-track temperature checks and daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance, working with a lead or supervisor as needed.
  • Keep the pneumatic tube system bin from filling, unload carriers, inspect samples, route samples to automation input lanes or the Bulk Input Module, and separate paper requisitions for manual receiving.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot the TUG robot throughout the shift, recover it when stuck, contact vendor support, and notify nursing units to deliver samples to the laboratory when the system is unavailable.
  • Credit tests without results and record the credit reason; complete problem reports for mislabeled or unlabeled specimens; process add-on test requests within the required timeframes; log refrigerator, freezer, and heating-block temperatures and report issues; investigate problem-template tests and hand off unresolved issues; and monitor unreceived DPL during the shift.
  • Adhere to University and departmental policies and follow specimen-processing standards to maintain sample integrity and prevent errors.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of a clinical laboratory setting and medical terminology.
  • Typing and computer experience.
  • A valid California Phlebotomy CPT license.
