Requirements
  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Experience in phlebotomy is required.
  • Phlebotomy certification from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Certification by a nationally recognized certifying agency, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology, is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Attention to detail is required.
  • Accuracy in patient identification and specimen labeling is required.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and perform under stress during emergency situations is required.
  • Ability to maintain and work with highly confidential data is required.
  • Ability to maneuver in small areas, maintain good eye-hand coordination, and demonstrate excellent manual dexterity is required.
  • Visual acuity for working with terminals is required.
  • The role may involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue, spills or splashes, higher noise levels, and offensive odors.
Responsibilities
  • Collect and process clinical specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Perform data entry in the hospital electronic medical record.
  • Provide guidance to Health Centers, Wards, the Emergency Room, and Specialty Clinics regarding test ordering, specimen requirements, patient preparation instructions, and specimen processing requirements.
  • Answer questions and resolve problems for HIM, Billing, Fiscal Services, and Revenue Cycle concerning laboratory charges on patient accounts.
  • Manage the Advanced Beneficiary Notice process at the point of specimen collection.
  • Maintain appropriate stock of phlebotomy and specimen collection and processing supplies for laboratory operations.
  • Provide appropriate specimen collection supplies to Health Centers, the Emergency Room, and other supported areas.
  • Perform duties safely and efficiently in accordance with laboratory and hospital safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in phlebotomy.
  • One year of experience in specimen processing.
  • A medical terminology class or one year of experience in a healthcare setting.
