Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalence plus three to five years of pipe welding experience is desired; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Working knowledge of equipment, work processes, and techniques used in measuring, fitting, and welding steel.
  • Experience with x-ray pipe welding, the ability to weld pipe in all positions, and the ability to mirror weld.
  • Knowledge of welding symbols, ship terminology, Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards, and American Bureau of Shipbuilding standards.
  • Ability to pass the SMAW 6G pipe test to become ABS certified.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written, verbal, diagrammatic, and blueprint information and carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic across all units of measure and read a tape measure.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work at heights of at least 50 feet, in confined spaces, and in extreme heat and cold while wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and perform extensive standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
  • Ability to comply with applicable company, federal, state, and local safety, ethics, environmental, and personal protective equipment requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Plan, lay out, weld, install, test, and repair pipe and similar tubular products according to plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards.
  • Review layouts, blueprints, diagrams, and work orders before welding or cutting metal components.
  • Complete welds to specified standards using appropriate equipment and materials.
  • Install and verify the operation of high-pressure steel pipes and fittings.
  • Repair and replace damaged pipe; fabricate and install metal fittings; install supports, valves, and other control equipment; and secure parts for welding.
  • Use hand and power tools to measure, cut, assemble, weld, and install pipes and similar tubular products.
  • Test installed piping systems and install related items according to applicable plans and specifications.
  • Set up equipment and weld parts using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc, and gas welding equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment.
  • Produce high-quality welds, including watertight penetrations, in steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
  • Work with other crafts as instructed by supervision and with minimal supervision.
  • Successfully pass the specified 6G stainless steel, CUNI, and aluminum TIG weld coupon and 6G carbon steel root-and-cap weld coupon tests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
