Bright and early on a Tuesday morning, this reporter started her day being driven around by a robot. Almost exactly two years after it was announced, the Philadelphia Navy Yard’s autonomous shuttle pilot has started operating, transporting guests and employees around the South Philly campus. The self-driving shuttle felt like any other bus, stopping and starting smoothly (ok, maybe not like most other buses…) at all intersections. It automatically halts at each designated stop on its route, and automatically slows down if it senses vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians swerving around it
The next time you get in a shuttle at the Navy Yard in South Philly, it could be driving itself. The Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation’s (PIDC) autonomous vehicle shuttle pilot for visitors and Navy Yard employees will be launching in early January. PIDC first announced the project in February 2022 in partnership with Virginia-based Perrone Robotics. The project’s testing phase started about a year ago. At the time, officials called it the first AV shuttle project of its kind in Pennsylvania
Phoenix Motor Inc., an electrification solutions provider for medium-duty vehicles, has successfully demonstrated the nation's first autonomous cutaway shuttle bus with Houston METRO, in partnership with Perrone Robotics, STV and AECOM.
