Gov. Whitmer announces 128 new jobs coming to Northern Michigan through manufacturing expansions. 09-21-2026 at 11:10:16 AM EDT | Updated 09-21-2026 at 11:11:17 AM EDT WEST BRANCH - Two manufacturing projects in Northern Michigan are expected to bring 128 new jobs and more than $42.9 million in investment to the region. The projects are part of a larger announcement from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer involving three business expansions across Michigan. In total, the projects are expected to create at least 243 jobs and generate more than $64.8 million in capital investment. The third project involves automotive supplier U.S. Farathane, which is expanding in Port Huron. In West Branch, Wausau Supply Co. plans to build a 260,000-square-foot facility for advanced manufacturing and door production. The company plans to invest at least $41 million and create 92 new jobs, with starting wages of $22 per hour plus benefits. Wausau Supply already employs 108 people in Michigan and operates a distribution and manufacturing facility in West Branch. The project is supported by a $575,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. "Every new job in West Branch is also a new ownership stake in our future," said Brian Miller, president and CEO of Wausau Supply Co. "This facility lets us expand our manufacturing capabilities to meet real demand from our customers, and we couldn't ask for a better place to do it." In Oscoda County, Cooper Standard plans to build a 15,500-square-foot facility in Comins Township. The project is expected to create 36 jobs and represents more than $1.9 million in capital investment. The company is receiving a $200,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. Cooper Standard plans to use the facility to consolidate multiple business lines and complete more of its manufacturing process in Michigan. The company also plans to install a new brazing oven, which is used to join metal components during manufacturing. "We are grateful for the support of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Comins Township, Oscoda County, and our local partners as we invest in Cooper Standard's continued growth in Northeast Michigan," said Chris Couch, president of fluid handling systems and chief technology and AI officer at Cooper Standard. Cooper Standard employs more than 22,000 people worldwide, including more than 1,400 in Michigan, and operates facilities in 20 countries. State Rep. Cam Cavitt, R-Cheboygan, said the Cooper Standard project will create new jobs and investment in Oscoda County. The Northeast Michigan Council of Governments also said the project will strengthen the region's manufacturing industry and provide additional economic opportunities. For Northern Michigan, the two projects are expected to add 128 jobs in Ogemaw and Oscoda counties while bringing more than $42.9 million in new investment to the region. The third project announced by the state involves U.S. Farathane, a Tier 1 automotive supplier, which plans to expand its presence in Port Huron and create 115 jobs. Whitmer said the three projects demonstrate continued investment in Michigan's advanced manufacturing and automotive industries. Top videos.

Cooper Standard posts higher second-quarter sales as earnings decline.

Cooper Standard posts higher second-quarter sales as earnings decline. 12 Aug 2026 Automotive supplier maintains full-year guidance, expects second-half recovery Northville, Michigan - Cooper Standard has reported higher second quarter sales but lower earnings as higher raw material costs, inflation and tariffs outweighed favourable currency effects. For the three months ended 30 June, sales increased 2.2% year-on-year to $721 million (€625 million), while adjusted earnings (EBITDA) fell 14.2% to $54 million, from $62.8 million a year earlier, the automotive supplier reported 6 Aug. The decline in earnings was primarily driven by "higher material costs, general inflationary pressures, unfavourable volume and mix, and increased customs duties and tariffs," the US group said. The cost increases were partially offset by continuing supply chain optimisation and lean manufacturing savings, Cooper Standard added. "While higher oil prices drove inflationary pressures on our costs in the second quarter as we had anticipated, we expect to recover most of those incremental costs in the second half of the year," said chairman and CEO Jeffrey Edwards. Breaking down performance across segments, Cooper Standard's sealing systems business saw sales decline by 2.9% year-on-year to $354 million, while adjusted earnings fell 35.2% to $26 million. The decline reflected weaker volume and product mix, which reduced sales by $18.6 million, partly offset by a $8.2-million benefit from favourable foreign exchange. Segment earnings were also hit by a $12.3 million negative impact of lower volumes, and $3 million impact of higher costs, partially offset by a positive currency impact. The fluid handling systems segment delivered stronger performance, with sales rising 7% to $345 million and adjusted earnings increasing 3.3% to $27.9 million. Sales growth was driven mainly by stronger volumes and mix, which added $20.9 million, alongside a $2 million foreign exchange benefit. Earnings improved as favourable volume and mix more than offset adverse currency effects and higher costs. During the quarter, Cooper Standard said it secured $118.4 million in net new business awards representing anticipated future annualised sales, including $36.6 million linked to battery electric and full-hybrid vehicle platforms. Looking ahead, Edwards said the supplier remains "on track to achieve our sales and profitability targets for the full year." The supplier said it expects full-year sales and adjusted earnings to remain in line with its original 2026 business plan. As previously reported by ERJ, the The US supplier expects to deliver sales of between $2.7 and $2.9 billion for the full year, against $2.74 billion reported in 2025. Adjusted earnings is expected to come in between $260 and $300 million, compared to $210 million reported last year. * Every issue of European Rubber Journal (6 issues) including Special Reports & Maps. * Unlimited access to ERJ articles online * Daily email newsletter - the latest news direct to your inbox * Access to the ERJ online archive

Cooper-Standard Q2 sales rise 2.2% to $721M but adjusted EBITDA falls on tariffs and inflation

Cooper-Standard reported second-quarter sales of $721.3 million, up 2.2% year-over-year, but adjusted EBITDA fell to $53.9 million from $62.8 million as material inflation, tariffs and wage pressures outweighed operational savings. The company posted an adjusted net loss of $2.3 million, compared with adjusted net income of $1 million in the prior-year quarter. Material costs rose $10 million due to higher rubber, metal and resin prices, whilst duties and tariffs added $8 million in costs. Management expects to recover most incremental material and tariff costs in the second half through pricing agreements. Cooper-Standard generated $16.3 million in free cash flow and secured $118 million in new business awards during the quarter, supporting its goal of over $400 million in 2026 awards.
