Michael Burry, the hedge fund manager who predicted the 2008 financial crisis, has warned that AI companies are hiding $3 trillion in data centre debts that could destabilise the global economy. Burry's analysis of regulatory filings reveals Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta and Oracle have accumulated massive off-balance-sheet obligations. The five companies have signed $1.2 trillion in data centre leases, with at least $857 billion non-cancellable, plus over $1.5 trillion in supply chain purchase commitments. These liabilities don't appear on their balance sheets under current accounting rules. Burry warns this could reach $5 trillion by 2028. With combined annual earnings under $400 billion, Burry questions what happens if AI growth disappoints. Oracle, Microsoft and Meta shares have already fallen from recent peaks.
Oracle is integrating with Swift's blockchain ledger to help financial institutions connect tokenised deposit infrastructures across banks. The integration enables banks to extend existing payment services with interoperable tokenised deposits and manage traditional and digital asset payment flows through a unified operating model. Swift's ledger provides cross-bank coordination, allowing participating institutions to incorporate tokenised deposits from their own bank-centric ledgers into interbank payment flows. Oracle simplifies participation through Oracle Blockchain Platform and Oracle Digital Assets Data Nexus, providing a pre-integrated foundation for tokenised deposit infrastructure. Oracle Banking Payments connects these digital asset flows with existing ISO 20022 payment processing. The solution aims to help institutions deliver seamless, always-on payment experiences whilst maintaining control, security and regulatory compliance. Oracle announced the integration at Sibos in Miami.
Oracle and Salesforce have underperformed the market over the past year, with Oracle's stock plummeting 55% and Salesforce down 3%, compared to the S&P 500's 16% gain. Both companies are investing heavily in artificial intelligence. Oracle is pivoting towards cloud infrastructure, securing major contracts with OpenAI, Meta, and Nvidia. First-quarter cloud infrastructure sales surged 121% year-over-year to $7.4 billion, with total revenue rising 30% to $19.3 billion. However, investor concerns are mounting over Oracle's aggressive AI spending. Capital expenditures jumped 235% to $28.5 billion in the first quarter. The company's $165 billion Project Jupiter data centre in New Mexico faces delays due to permitting and power supply issues, pushing completion beyond the original late-2028 target. These setbacks have spooked shareholders worried about the return on Oracle's massive AI infrastructure investments.
Intuit reported FY 2026 revenue of nearly $21.4 billion, up 13.9%, with net income of $4.6 billion and a net margin of about 21.3%. The company serves roughly 93 million users through TurboTax and QuickBooks. Oracle posted FY 2026 revenue of close to $67.4 billion, up 17.4%, with net income of approximately $17.1 billion and a net margin of roughly 25.4%. However, free cash flow was negative $23.7 billion due to heavy data centre investments. Intuit maintains a debt-to-equity ratio of roughly 0.4x, whilst Oracle's stands at nearly 3.7x. Oracle recently settled data privacy issues for $115 million. Oracle's cloud infrastructure revenue more than doubled in the most recent quarter, with a backlog exceeding $600 billion signalling strong future demand.
Oracle granted founder Larry Ellison and co-CEOs Clay Magouyrk and Mike Sicilia stock options worth $988 million in fiscal 2026. By year-end on 31 May, all options were underwater as Oracle's stock fell 53% over 12 months to $137. Ellison's package was valued at $117.8 million with a $280 strike price. Magouyrk and Sicilia received options worth $621.7 million and $248.7 million respectively, with a $308 strike price following their September 2025 promotions. Despite the stock decline, Oracle's cloud revenue rose 39% to $34 billion and overall revenue increased 17% to $67.4 billion. However, free cash flow was negative $23.7 billion. All three executives received $4.9 million cash bonuses. Ellison's base salary increased from $1 to $950,000. Shareholders will vote on the pay plan on 18 November.
