Requirements
  • At least 12 months of previous pharmacy experience.
  • Registration with the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy within 90 days of employment.
  • State Board-approved technician certification for Certified Pharmacy Technician status.
  • Basic computer and typing skills.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to perform light lifting, pushing, and pulling of 10–20 pounds occasionally, frequent movement of objects under 10 pounds, and frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to use a keyboard/computer and perform repetitive motions as required.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare, select, compound, fill, and dispense age-appropriate medications under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Provide double or triple checks to pharmacists before dispensing.
  • Prepackage and label medications into unit doses from bulk supply.
  • Maintain accurate records, including all regulatory logs.
  • Prioritize medication orders appropriately.
  • Ensure equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Use automated dispensing cabinets and the pharmacy carousel, including resolving discrepancies and making billing adjustments.
  • Maintain clean and organized workflow.
  • Follow policies for medications with special requirements.
  • Maintain annual competencies in a timely manner.
  • Restock medication rooms with medication inventory and reconcile unadministered patient doses.
  • Communicate supply and medication needs to Pharmacy Purchasing staff.
  • Resolve questions with the pharmacist, nursing service, and/or physician.
  • Answer the phone promptly and appropriately.
  • Promote and maintain professional relationships with other departments.
  • Train new interns or technicians when assigned.
  • Work effectively with department and unit teams across departmental lines.
  • Read, attend, and acknowledge pharmacy and hospital communications.
  • Accept other assignments requested by management.
  • Use hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably.
  • Understand specific mixing instructions before medication compounding to minimize waste.
  • Monitor drug shortages and backorders.
  • Suggest par adjustments, additions, or deletions and check for expiring inventory monthly.
  • Bill and credit departments and patients appropriately and promptly.
Desired Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Hospital pharmacy experience.
