Requirements
- One year of prior experience in Oncology, stem cell transplant, or critical care is recommended.
- Physician Assistants must hold a Bachelor's degree or above from an accredited college or university and graduate from an accredited PA program.
- Nurse Practitioners must hold a Master's or doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university and graduate from an accredited NP program.
- Physician Assistants must be licensed in California and certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Physician Assistants must hold Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
- A Drug Enforcement Administration license for Schedule II–V controlled substances is required only when prescribing controlled substances to outpatients.
- Nurse Practitioners must be licensed as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in California and hold national board certification from an agency accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties.
- New graduate Nurse Practitioners have six months from graduation to obtain national board certification.
- Nurse Practitioners must hold Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
- A furnishing license from the California Board of Registered Nursing is required only when furnishing medications.
- Additional board certifications may be required by certain services, specialties, or departments.
- The provider may perform only medical services within their competence, consistent with their education, training, and experience, and in collaboration with a physician.
- The provider must consult a physician about tasks, procedures, or diagnostic problems beyond their competence or refer such cases to a collaborating physician.
Responsibilities
- Receive sign-out from the overnight team, pre-round on assigned patients, develop a daily plan of care, present patients on rounds, write daily notes, implement the agreed plan, and respond to issues raised by nurses.
- Evaluate and treat patients with acute and chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to the specialty, according to written standardized procedures.
- Obtain complete histories and perform relevant physical examinations on new and returning patients, assessing normal and abnormal findings.
- Perform or request and evaluate diagnostic studies as indicated by patient evaluation.
- Administer, order, furnish, and prescribe medications.
- Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures, and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products.
- Order physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations, and nursing services.
- Perform designated procedures after demonstrating competency and according to written standardized procedures where applicable.
- Obtain informed consent when indicated.
- Initiate hospital admissions and discharges and complete the required paperwork.
- As directed by the supervising physician, enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the Institutional Review Board and order necessary tests and medications.
- After appropriate training, assist the supervising physician in the operating room. The RN First Assistant directly assists and practices under the surgeon's supervision during the intraoperative phase and must follow standardized procedures without concurrently functioning as a scrub nurse.
- Recognize and address age-specific patient needs.
- Communicate and interact with patients, families, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
- Recognize situations requiring immediate physician attention and initiate life-saving procedures when necessary.
- Facilitate coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services, collaboration between providers, and coordination of community resources.
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and clinical policies and procedures.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Provide and coordinate patient teaching and counseling.
- Practice under the supervision of a supervising or sponsoring physician, using standardized procedures and applicable on-site, electronic, or telephone supervision.
- Participate in random chart screens or audits and ongoing professional practice evaluation through performance-indicator tracking.
