Requirements
  • An Arizona registered nurse license that is active and unrestricted, or a valid participating compact license.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required upon hire.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is required.
  • Registered nurses hired on or after July 1, 2016 must graduate from a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program within six years of hire into an RN position.
  • Registered nurses hired before July 1, 2016 who lack a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or are not pursuing one must obtain the degree within six years of promotion to Charge RN.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee and direct patient care activities on the unit during the worked shift.
  • Address patient and family concerns and communicate issues and solutions through appropriate channels.
  • Document incidents, events, interventions, and patient, staff, and physician responses.
  • Serve as a patient advocate.
  • Prioritize and problem-solve to respond to changes in patient status or condition.
  • Coordinate with other departments on patient throughput, discharge planning, and patient education.
  • Collaborate with physicians and healthcare professionals to ensure staffing patterns provide an appropriate skill mix for quality patient care.
  • Serve as a liaison among patients, physicians, administrative coordinators, staffing and transfer offices, care coordination, unit staff, ancillary staff, and departments.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and assist staff with patient care and physicians with order entry.
  • Staff the current and next shifts by determining appropriate staffing levels and skill mix.
  • Assign patient care teams and delegate patient care activities to unit and ancillary staff.
  • Address workflow issues and ensure incidents are documented and corrective steps are taken.
  • Make bed and patient assignments based on patient needs and available staff resources.
  • Identify referral and educational resources for patients and staff.
  • Advocate for patients and staff as needs arise.
  • Ensure staff compliance with department policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Monitor staff performance and provide timely constructive feedback.
  • Identify performance-improvement opportunities and provide resources and education.
  • Recognize employees for strong performance and improvement.
  • Collaborate with the clinical manager on employee performance evaluations.
  • Communicate with the clinical manager regarding staff performance.
  • Provide coaching to nursing staff.
  • Provide input to nursing leadership regarding performance evaluations, promotions, corrective action, and termination.
  • Participate in creating and sustaining a learning environment supported by evidence-based practice and research.
  • Participate in mentoring and educating colleagues and students.
  • Report safety incidents through the Midas/RDE tool and attend required safety training.
  • Monitor the work environment for safety issues and ensure others work safely.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory, organizational, hospital, and departmental standards and policies.
  • Keep required certifications and licenses current when applicable.
  • Complete mandatory modules and job-specific training within specified timeframes.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, electronic medical record entries, and patient responses.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification as a Certified Nurse Operating Room professional.
  • At least one year of experience as a registered nurse.
