Requirements
  • Five years of related experience and/or training.
  • Experience with water, storm, or sewer pipe installation and grading for roadways.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, plans, and other documents; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including frequently lifting or moving up to 50 pounds and working on uneven ground.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and potentially at heights or in shafts and tunnels, with occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and loud noise.
Responsibilities
  • Review documents and plans and resolve questions before work begins.
  • Examine blueprints, plans, and profiles to determine structural dimensions.
  • Direct and train the crew to perform work according to contract drawings and specifications within the production budget.
  • Serve as the OSHA-defined competent person on the job.
  • Select materials to ensure they conform to project requirements, plan ahead for material availability, and estimate, requisition, and inspect materials.
  • Plan the sequence of project activities with the Superintendent and Project Engineer as part of two-week schedule planning.
  • Assign workers to tasks such as operating machinery and equipment, installing trench boxes, and installing pipes.
  • Inspect subcontractor work for conformance with specifications.
  • Supervise workers performing utility installations and grading for roadwork.
  • Study production schedules and estimate worker-hour requirements for completing assignments.
  • Maintain a crew contact list and know crew members by name.
  • Conduct daily crew huddles explaining the work and how it is to be accomplished, and train inexperienced crew members.
  • Interpret company policies and enforce company disciplinary procedures when addressing employee problems.
  • Evaluate job-site safety issues and make changes as necessary; enforce safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules and recommend improvements to production methods, equipment performance, product quality, working conditions, and equipment use.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems or assist workers in resolving them, and suggest plans to motivate workers toward work goals.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate time and production records, including verified quantities and work locations; submit timesheets on time.
  • Keep the job team informed of progress and problems.
  • Set up machines and equipment and supervise their use.
  • Maintain a detailed daily job diary.
  • Hold weekly crew safety meetings and file reports on attendance and content.
  • Perform the activities of workers being supervised and finish work activities while minimizing punch lists.
  • Direct, coordinate, and evaluate the crew, which may include managing one lead person supervising two to three employees and directly supervising three to five nonsupervisory employees.
  • Train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; address complaints; and resolve problems.
