About the Job

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science in Chemical, Polymer, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering or a related field, with at least 8 years of process engineering experience.
  • Hands-on TPU film or sheet extrusion experience; optical-grade or paint protection film experience is strongly preferred.
  • Deep expertise in cast and/or blown film extrusion, including screw and die design, melt filtration, drying, chill-roll casting, and winding.
  • Strong understanding of how temperature, shear, residence time, and moisture affect TPU degradation, morphology, and film performance.
  • A proven record of lab-to-production scale-up and leading complex, data-driven troubleshooting.
  • Advanced Lean/Six Sigma and statistical skills, including design of experiments, statistical process control, and Cp/Cpk, with measurable results.
  • Experience specifying and commissioning extrusion equipment and leading reliability improvements.
  • Demonstrated cross-functional influence, multi-project leadership in multi-site environments, and mentoring engineers.
  • Willingness to travel 25–50%.

Responsibilities

  • Own TPU extrusion process strategy and roadmap across internal, toll, and acquired manufacturing sites.
  • Define process–performance links between melt temperature, shear, residence time, moisture, and cooling and film haze, gels, birefringence, surface quality, and gauge.
  • Set process standards for drying, filtration, screw and die design, casting, and inline inspection; lead equipment specification, factory acceptance testing, and commissioning for new lines and upgrades.
  • Partner with research and development to scale new TPU formulations from lab to pilot to production using design-of-experiments-driven trials, and own technology transfer packages, including process windows, critical-to-quality measures, and control plans.
  • Qualify new raw materials and suppliers for process impact and identify process intellectual property with research and development and legal teams.
  • Lead cross-site root-cause investigations into optical defects, gels, contamination, die lines, and gauge variation using 8D, DMAIC, and similar tools.
  • Maintain process failure mode and effects analyses, control plans, standard operating procedures, and work instructions, and work with Quality to meet customer and industry specifications.
  • Set statistical process control and Cp/Cpk targets, track yield, scrap, and overall equipment effectiveness key performance indicators, and lead inline gauge, defect inspection, and digital monitoring initiatives.
  • Drive Lean and Six Sigma improvement programs with measurable cost, quality, and throughput results.
  • Mentor process engineers and technicians, and serve as the technical interface to equipment vendors, resin suppliers, and contract manufacturers.
  • Communicate strategy, risks, and results to production, quality, research and development, commercial, and executive stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications

  • An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Optical-grade or paint protection film experience is strongly preferred.
  • A Six Sigma Black Belt is preferred.
  • Coextrusion and multilayer film experience, including feedblock and multi-manifold dies, ideally in cleanroom or optical, display, or medical-grade settings.
  • Working knowledge of TPU/EPU chemistry and additives, including UV absorbers, HALS, and antioxidants, and their behavior during processing.
  • Familiarity with downstream paint protection film and film steps, including coating, lamination, adhesives, and slitting.
  • Proficiency with film characterization, including haze, gloss, gauge, rheology, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and data tools including Python, JMP, Minitab, and manufacturing execution systems.
  • Experience supporting international sites, toll manufacturers, or acquisition integration; patents or publications are a plus.

About the Company

XPEL

Paint protection film and coatings provider

XPEL provides protective films and coatings for vehicles and other surfaces, plus installation services. Its flagship products include paint protection films (such as ULTIMATE PLUS) that shield paint and can self-heal light scratches, along with window films and protective coatings. It operates the Design Access Program (DAP), a software pattern database with over 120,000 vehicle patterns to help installers cut films accurately. The company differentiates itself with a direct-to-installer model, a trained installer network, and integrated training, marketing, and support, plus a broad product lineup; its goal is global expansion and stronger margins through expanded offerings and direct installer relationships.
