Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Ability to perform word processing, data entry, and report formatting on a computer using specialized database and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must be able to work shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to obtain and maintain a City of Hoover Driver's Permit.
  • Ability to pass an extensive background check.
Responsibilities
  • Process prisoners in and out of the city jail according to prescribed procedures and laws, including booking prisoners, fingerprinting, photographing, searching inmates, and assigning cells and property drawers.
  • Conduct medical screening for diseases, infections, and other potential medical problems.
  • Prepare felon inmates for release to other agencies.
  • Prepare release papers and computer information upon release of prisoners.
  • Provide direct supervision of prisoners in the city jail, including overseeing inmates' daily activities and ensuring the security of inmates, trustees, and all other jail personnel.
  • Provide for prisoners' daily needs, including administering medication prescribed by a doctor, supervising meal preparation, showers, and linen changes, and ensuring clean living conditions.
  • Oversee inmate phone use, day room use, visitation, and other activities outside cells.
  • Supervise inmate work, including assigning work details as necessary.
  • Monitor inmate behavior and activities to ensure compliance with rules and regulations, take appropriate disciplinary action for infractions, and fully document each infraction.
  • Perform thorough cell inspections to search for contraband, including narcotics, cigarettes, alcohol, weapons, and other prohibited materials.
  • Ensure detention facilities are kept clean and orderly by monitoring inmates' cleaning activities.
  • Monitor mentally or emotionally disturbed or intoxicated inmates to ensure their safety and welfare.
  • Conduct periodic inmate checks during all shifts.
  • Escort inmates to and from visiting areas and courtrooms as necessary.
  • Complete daily jail activity reports and arrest reports.
  • Assist the warrants division as requested by accurately checking and confirming warrants for dispatch, outside agencies, bonding companies, and private persons.
  • Perform other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of experience in a corrections or detention environment involving knowledge of jail responsibilities and procedures.
  • An Associate's Degree or equivalent credit hours in Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, Public Administration, Psychology, or a closely related field.
