Amentum opens global nuclear headquarters in Oak Ridge, employs 2,200 in East Tennessee

Amentum, a Fortune 500 company, has opened a new global nuclear headquarters in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Virginia-based firm employs 2,200 workers in East Tennessee and partners with Jacobs and Honeywell to operate United Cleanup Oak Ridge, a major environmental cleanup contractor for the Department of Energy. The company's nuclear projects include supporting a South African reactor and decommissioning Japan's Fukushima Daiichi power plant. Amentum chose Oak Ridge for its nuclear centre due to the area's support for nuclear technology and emerging private nuclear ventures. CEO John Heller cited increasing electricity demand from AI as a growth driver for the nuclear industry. The company announced the Amentum Nuclear Scholars Program, connecting Roane State Community College and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville to develop the local nuclear workforce.

The facility anchors Amentum's deepening footprint in east Tennessee, where the company already serves as the lead partner in United Cleanup Oak Ridge (UCOR), the U.S. Department of Energy's prime environmental management contractor for the Oak Ridge Reservation. "The opening of our Global Nuclear Headquarters represents a monumental step forward for our business and our industry," said Mark Whitney, president of Amentum's Energy & Environment division. "By centralizing our global nuclear operations in Oak Ridge, we are leveraging strong local partnerships to deliver increased energy capacity to meet the electricity demand of the people and businesses across the U.S. This facility empowers our team of experts to deliver next-generation nuclear innovation, and it builds directly upon the strong operational foundation we've established in the region through our Amentum-led UCOR partnership while contributing directly to regional economic growth." To sustain the industry's rapidly expanding need for professional and technical labor, Amentum simultaneously launched the Amentum Nuclear Scholars Program. This transformational initiative establishes a synchronized scholarship pipeline between Roane State Community College and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). The newly founded partnership is headlined by a five-year investment from Amentum totaling $500,000 towards developing curriculum and scholarships that build the critical talent pipeline for the world's growing nuclear energy demands. When combined with other Amentum-led STEM sponsorships and donations in the Oak Ridge community, total student support for these two academic institutions exceeds $1 million. "By launching the Amentum Nuclear Scholars Program alongside our new headquarters, we are directly investing in the local student talent who will pioneer the future of advanced energy and infrastructure solutions," Whitney said. The educational pipeline will launch its first student cohort stateside in late 2026, followed by integration with Amentum's international academic partners in the fall of 2027. To celebrate the opening, Amentum hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring CEO John Heller, U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN-03) local elected leaders and school officials. "This partnership paves the way for students to gain the educational foundation necessary to excel as future leaders in the nuclear industry," said UTK Tickle College of Engineering (TCE) Dean Matthew Mench, the Wayne T. Davis dean's chair of the college. "Through the financial support from Amentum and practical internship experiences, TCE students will be prepared to step directly into high-demand roles that will positively impact our community, state and country." "By partnering with Amentum, we are opening doors for students to start right here in their community and graduate onto a global stage," said Dr. Chris Whaley, Roane State Community College president. "The Amentum Nuclear Scholars Program removes the financial hurdles that often halt a student's momentum, providing a direct, supported pathway from our classrooms straight into high-wage, high-impact careers." Trax loses White Sands protest, but judge hits government over AI disclosures.

Trax loses White Sands protest, but judge hits government over AI disclosures. Stay Connected Find opportunities - and win them. By Nick Wakeman , Editor-in-Chief, Washington Technology September 30, 2026 10:28 AM ET The Army tested an artificial intelligence tool on the $450 million competition, and its outputs reached evaluators and the contracting officer. The government did not provide many details on that until the judge pressed. Trax International Corp. may have lost its protest at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, but the government's lawyers may be in some hot water for not being forthcoming with the judge. Over the summer, Trax challenged the Army's decision to award a $450 million mission support services contract at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico to the Southwest Range Services joint venture. SA-Tech, Amentum and EWA Warrior Services are partners in the JV. TRAX laid out several challenges to how the Army conducted evaluations, including the fact that the service branch used artificial intelligence to evaluate proposals. Trax argued that the Army's Fast Track AI tool committed several hallucinations that gave the impression that the proposal by Southwest Range Services was superior to Trax's bid. Judge Carolyn Lerner denied that argument because TRAX could not identify any actual errors in the evaluation that could be traced to the AI tool. Lerner wrote in her Sept. 22 ruling that while she "cannot entirely rule out the use of AI," TRAX needed to show more. But at the same time, the Army drew the judge's ire because their story about how they used the AI tool changed over the course of the case. The judge has written a still-sealed show cause order to force the government to explain itself on the record. The show cause order will not change the outcome for TRAX, but it could result in some sanctions for the attorneys representing the Army. Lerner wants the government to "explain the errors and misrepresentations in its briefing" on TRAX's motion to add the AI evaluations to the record. The dispute over the record began when Trax asked the court to add the AI outputs to the administrative record. The government said a procurement analyst had run the proposals through Fast Track to test whether the tool could be used in future source selections. According to the government, the evaluation board saw only one output from a third unnamed bidder and only on a screen. Board members judged it unusable and none of the outputs were entered into the contract file or used in the decision, the government said. That account did not hold up. When Lerner ordered the Army officials to answer specific questions in supplemental declarations, the procurement analyst acknowledged for the first time that he had also sent the AI evaluations of the TRAX and Southwest Range proposals to three people. Two were members of the evaluation board and the third person was the contracting officer. Lerner called it a "belated admission." She ruled that the AI evaluations need to be in the administrative record because they are "relevant to the process" and bear directly on "Trax's claim that AI-assisted review introduced errors that infected its technical evaluation." Once the AI outputs were in the record, it became clear the board's evaluation of the third bidder contained passages that were nearly sentence-for-sentence identical to the AI-generated evaluation. Lerner has written her show cause order, but the government has asked for more time to submit redactions to the order. Redactions were due Sept. 30 (today) and the judge's response is expected Oct. 13.
