Requirements
  • An MD or MD/PhD degree and board certification in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • A Florida medical license and Drug Enforcement Administration certificate.
  • At least 0–2 years of experience post fellowship.
  • An excellent academic record and recognized leadership in heart transplantation and cardiac surgery.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to build programs and align constituencies.
  • Recognized teaching skills and expertise in residency, fellowship, and medical student training.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatments.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with proper bedside manner.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and establish clinical, financial, educational, and research divisional objectives.
  • Develop and regulate the Division's operational budget with the Department Chair.
  • Propose and gain acceptance of short-term objectives supporting the strategic plan, including care pathways and medical and logistical plans and procedures.
  • Promote the mission of UHealth through medical education, research, and quality patient care.
  • Ensure that the Division's clinical services are high quality, meet community needs, and support the organization.
  • Participate in international, national, regional, and local healthcare industry activities affecting the future role and funding environment of the Divisional Surgical Areas.
  • Serve in key Department of Surgery activities as agreed upon with the Division Chief.
  • Participate in establishing education and training policies and direct and assist faculty in academic progress and clinical experience for resident, fellow, and student education.
  • Provide clinical care in pediatric and adult cardiac surgery, cardiothoracic trauma, and surgery for electrophysiologic abnormalities, and collaborate with the Heart and Lung Transplantation Teams.
  • Build private clinics at University of Miami Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospitals and participate in clinical care at University of Miami Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Miami Veterans Administration Hospital.
  • Contribute to minimally invasive cardiac valve programs, the aortic surgery center, and other growing areas of cardiac surgery.
  • Supervise residents at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center and the Miami Veterans Administration Hospital.
  • Teach students in junior and senior elective programs sponsored by the Division during their surgical experience.
  • Pursue protocols to fund experiments under the individual's supervision.
  • Document all services in patient medical records.
  • Comply with departmental policies, procedures, and hospital bylaws.
  • Exercise final medical judgment in healthcare matters.
  • Order studies, tests, and ancillary services in patient medical records.
  • Interview and treat clinical patients to meet their medical needs.
  • Educate patients and families on wellness, prevention, and early detection by providing materials and resources.
