  • Backlog reached $72 billion in Q2 2026, with orders extending into 2030.
  • Power generation sales to users jumped 72% as data-center demand filled capacity.

What critics are saying

  • Tariffs are projected to cost $2.2 billion in 2026, crushing margins.

  • Caterpillar’s dealer network and installed base convert equipment sales into recurring parts and service revenue.
  • Its large-engine and turbine capacity now targets data centers, oil and gas, and mining.

Caterpillar adds capacity betting on data centre demand through 2030

Caterpillar stock rose 94% over the past twelve months, driven partly by surging data center demand. Power generation sales to users grew 72% in the second quarter of 2026, with the Power & Energy segment booking $8.2 billion in sales. The company is racing to expand capacity, lifting new turbine production to 2.5 times 2024 levels. Lead times on gas prime power now extend to late 2028, with some orders placed as far out as 2030. However, analysts question whether data center demand will sustain through the decade. At $805 per share, Caterpillar's valuation assumes 17.4% annual revenue growth. Management expects new capacity to reach cash payback by decade's end, but aftermarket revenue from installed units won't materialise until after 2030. If data center orders cool before capacity investments pay off, growth could fall short of market expectations.

Caterpillar's construction growth now leans on dealer rental fleet loading, not merchandising programmes

Caterpillar's construction equipment demand drivers have shifted significantly over the past two years. The company previously attributed Construction Industries growth to merchandising programmes, which management credited for 5% full-year sales growth in 2025. Now, rental fleet loading — machines purchased by dealers for their rental operations — has become the primary growth driver. Construction Industries sales to users rose 22% in the June 2026 quarter, marking the sixth consecutive quarter of growth. The segment generated $8.3 billion in Q2 2026, up 35% year-over-year. Construction Industries now accounts for approximately 34% of Caterpillar's $74.7 billion trailing-twelve-month revenue. Management also highlighted Major Projects, a Cat dealer-owned rental joint venture launched in June 2026, which serves large-scale infrastructure, energy, and data centre builds.
