About the job

Requirements
  • Experience designing and deploying power conversion at real power levels, including DC-DC, inverters, rectifiers, motor drives, grid-tie, or AC-to-DC systems.
  • Hands-on experience with wide-bandgap semiconductors, including silicon carbide and gallium nitride.
  • Experience taking at least one converter from schematic through layout, magnetics, thermal design, and electromagnetic compatibility to working hardware.
  • Ability to reason from first principles about electrical architecture tradeoffs, including direct-drive versus geared and motoring-capable versus separate starter designs.
  • Understanding of tradeoffs between efficiency, thermal margin, and component cost, and ability to make decisions under time pressure.
  • Ability to perform bench and field bring-up, debugging, and instrumentation, and find root causes.
  • Consideration of installation and serviceability as part of design.
Responsibilities
  • Design the power stage for the first turbine, converting variable-speed generator output into 800 VDC.
  • Select and procure power-stage components and bring the system up alongside a live turbine on the test rig.
  • Work through thermal limits, fast load transients, and reliability requirements over extended testing.
  • Coordinate with the Controls Engineer on telemetry and sensing handoff between the power stage and embedded controls.
  • Design, procure, and install power electronics converting on-site microturbine output into DC for the site's DC bus bar.
  • Design some blocks from schematic through layout, magnetics, thermal design, and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Specify and qualify partner- and supplier-provided hardware and integrate it into the system.
  • Attend testing and on-site commissioning, remain accountable for end-to-end interface performance, and iterate based on observed results.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience commissioning a power-conversion installation.
  • Exposure to electric machines.
  • Control systems experience, from converter control loops to embedded platforms.

About the company

American Turbines produces compact gas turbines that ship quickly and install fast to enable distributed power generation. Turbines operate in parallel, so multiple units can be clustered together to scale capacity as demand grows without long construction projects. The company differentiates itself by prioritizing speed and modularity, allowing customers to expand energy capacity without building new centralized plants. Its goal is to provide scalable, modular infrastructure that offers immediate, flexible energy solutions as demand changes.
